Hello everybody,
we're trying to get the DNS registration of OESF.ORG renewed before it expires on the 4th November. It's worth people making a note of the current IP address which is 152.19.134.41 then, if the DNS expires, you can add an entry to your hosts file and still access the forum. we're also trying to get ibiblio to add www.zaurus.org as an alternative host name, so it's worth taking a note of that in case it goes live. meanwhile, I've set up http://forum.zaurus.org/forum/ and https://forum.zaurus.org/forum/ as a proxying service via my own personal server to allow access to this forum (with the IP hack so that it will still work in the event of oesf.org domain not being renewed), unfortunately the login page directs the browser to www.oesf.org, hopefully we can find a work-round for that. regards Paul |

I've set up http://forum.zaurus.org/forum/ and https://forum.zaurus.org/forum/ as a proxying service via my own personal server to allow access to this forum (using IP address so that it will still work in the event of oesf.org domain not being renewed), unfortunately the login page directs the browser to www.oesf.org
that uses a LetsEncrypt certificate, so it was thankfully free. Hopefully @varti and I can find a fix for this. thanks for the forbearance. regards Paul |

Hopefully @varti and I can find a fix for this. thanks for the forbearance. Thanks speculatrix! I have found the setting which sets the default url of the forum; in order to set the whole forum to use the zaurus.org domain name it might be necessary to also wait that our host provider sets that domain as an alias. Unfortunately, it seems that you can't set both oesf.org and zaurus.org as the forum's URLs, so for now we'll be able to use zaurus.org only to redirect it to the forum's main page. We'll do what we can so that we don't lose the oesf.org domain; if that will happen, I'll switch the whole forum to use zaurus.org. We still have a couple of months of time until the last deadline, if the domain change will become necessary we'll let you know in advance. BTW, the https protocol still isn't supported here, but it is being implemented, so I expect it to be supported in the next few months. Varti |

since we could add html files to the web space, we could roll a letsencrypt certificate for www.oesf.org, it's fairly easy.

From what I have understood you also need a running ACME client in order for the certification procedure to work, isn't it? I believe ibiblio is going to deploy one: https://answers.ibiblio.org/questions/1894/...ps-support.html Varti |

yes, but you can run the client on a different machine and copy the token file over.

oh, and the validation method can be at least two ways: either using http to fetch a token, or a DNS entry.
I use the former for my public websites, and the latter for my intranet sites which aren't publically accessible. |

Good news, offroadgeek renewed the domain for another year, which gives us a bit longer to come up with alternative strategies.
I'll repeat what I said to the other admins, I will only do what is wanted by the majority of the active members and admins, ie act on consensus, to try and do what's best for the community over the long term. regards, Paul |

That's a relief... where have you found this info? I have tried on whois.com, whois.icann.org and the command line whois, they all still indicate the Registry Expiry Date as today.

the DNS is hosted with dreamhost, and they have a whois: http://whoisweb.dreamhost.com/
I still see the old date when I look it up through other sources |

Ok, didn't think of checking if Dreamhost themselves have a whois service. The updated status still have to be propagated it seems.

Sorry I missed this thread until now. I have OESF set to auto-renew every year, it's not a big deal at all.
That reminds me, I do need to get Paul (and others?) admin access to dreahmost. |

@offroadgeek
Thanks for still covering the domain name costs, so now we don't have to worry about the registration expiration every year. I'd love to have the dreamhost account details too, so that in case of DNS problems we can directly check the status on the domain's control panel. Varti |
