Yes,  that's how I was navigating...by using the arrow keys.  I managed a total reset-reboot and was able to calibrate and now it works.
My Ambicom card is recognized and flashes,  but won't connect to the internet.  I set it up in the network settings.  Is there something special I have to do?

Aren't you glad to have a totally clueless individual try this out.  laugh.gif

edit: Network settings keeps resetting the device to "none" as soon as I okay out of it.  I just put the name as ambicom..is something else required?  Looked at ifconfig -a in the console and did not know what to do with the information.

QUOTE(ZDevil @ Apr 15 2007, 10:51 AM)
Do you mean the inputsetup window? You can use the Tab key to cycle thru the keys (just look at the dotted frame wrapping around the item).

Also try rm /etc/pointercal and then restart x to calibrate the stylus pointer.

Not at all, to my mind pdaX, just like other linux distros, should be designed for human use but not for its own sake. It is doomed to be a failure if common users can't use it.

This is how I set up my connection to the shared network at home (via router):

#1 Set up a network profile:
Open the "LAN & Wifi" application.
Create a new profile (should be named either eth0 or wlan0), then fill in any necessary information (such as SSID, security key, etc) as what you would do to set up wireless connection on desktops.
Remember to save the profile before quitting the application.

#2 Set up the wifi card
Insert the card.
Normally the LED on the card should flash right after being inserted.
Ideally, the card is automatically detected and is ready to use.
If not, make sure the card is detected by the device, such as by doing the following:
Use commands such as "pccardctl ident (or info or status)", "lsmod" and "dmesg" (plug the card in first and see the last few lines of the dmesg screen; the error messages are quite comprehensible even without much technical knowledge.)
You don't need to run all of them if you find positive results in any one of these.

The setup process is actually not so intimidating; most common problems, i think, stem from incorrect profiles details or unsupported cards or lack of driver/firmware.
Do correct me if i am wrong. As a mere user, my linux knowledge is also very limited.

Thanks for the help, ZDevil. This card worked with pdaxrom beta 3 and pdaxii13 and works with the Sharp Rom on my 3200.
Dillo keeps saying "dns can't solve". The network settings keeps reverting back to "none" and will not "keep" my ambicom settings (just the default settings...I have no password for the router...we're in the mountains with no one around so it isn't necessary.) The ambicom settings are listed but "none" opens as the default every time.

Did you save the profile (there is a save button in the first tab)?
When you start the "Lan & Wifi", you can choose the profile name by just click on "none" and a saved list will appear.
If you don't use password, pick the right option in the wireless tab.
Can't help much here. I am no expert and I use a different card.

Or, more technically:
In the terminal, what do you see when type in ... ?
ifconfig eth0
and
iwconfig eth0

Yes, I saved the profile. And am able to choose the profile once I open Network settings.
Those commands just give a Device not found message. Just discovered that my sd card is not recognized and any cf card I insert is not available.
This is an Ambicom WL1100C 2.2 according to the little taskbar utility.

Giving up for now. If this is an improvement, I'm glad I didn't try out the earlier versions! biggrin.gif
I'm almost ready to flash back to my tremendously modified but great-working beta 3 or better yet my old Cacko ROM.

Just wait a sec, try these commands from rxvt :

CODE
# ifconfig wlan0 down
# iwconfig wlan0 essid wifi01 mode managed
# ifconfig wlan0 up
# dhcpcd wlan0
# ifconfig wlan0

first do "ifconfig" so you know the name of your device ("wlan0" or "eth0")
So if it is eth0, replace "wlan0" with "eth0"
Also, these lines are to connect to a managed network, router named "wifi01" and with dhcp.

Questions? Just ask.

Yes, memory cards are not mounted automatically when inserted.
See Post #26 for the *simple* fix of the issue. smile.gif

Now for me after struggling with r197 for one night and one morning, the system seems to be basically usable now:
-- Keymap is now not so insane
(After fixing many files related to keys; the silkscreen keys and screen swivel still not working)
-- Wifi CF is working
(After adding the right firmware)
-- Icewm 1.2.30 runs fine with Rox
(After fighting with matchbox in vain)

The goodies of r197 (compared to Beta3):
-- Speed improvement;
-- Being able to suspend outside X;
-- More modern stuff (kernel 2.6, updated packages and libraries).

So I would let r197 stay on my 860 for now. Next is to set up the native compiling environment. Then I can start compiling with this new system.

Also will keep track of useful info in this thread and the one for r197 for new material to add in the documentation.

ifconfig just has a "lo" listed with some parameters..nothing else. The other commands just say "No such device." I DID get my sd card to show up in the taskbar utility by putting a line in fstab but I still cannot get to its content.

So, basically, I can't use my sd card nor any cf card nor my wifi card.

This is basically working great for everyone else??

Edit: Found a posting somewhere which said to delete noauto in fstab. Did that and after a reboot, my sd and cf cards mounted. Will that be fixed in a new release? Still am getting nowhere with my Ambicom wifi card...gosh, it must be THE most common card so it should be automatically supported, no?

At any rate I installed Rox. Do I use the same method as I used in beta 3 to get Rox as the default WM. I think I used the method on this page: Rox as default Window Manager method described

What are the last 10 lines of "dmesg" after plugging in the wifi-card ?

What does iwconfig say when the card is plugged in ?

What does ifconfig say ?

Try #pccardctl insert. That should get your card to show up when you type #ifconfig. Or try #ifconfig wlan0 up.

I am using an Ambicom card on r198 to write this now, so I know it works smile.gif

I couldn't cope...I flashed back to my tweaked beta3 installation.
Couldn't get Rox to work correctly with Matchbox...don't know how to install IceWM and Rox together. Couldn't get my Ambicom wireless card to work.

I'll wait until some of the problems are solved via a new release. I get tired of chasing down solutions on the message boards and editing files to get basic stuff to work so I'm not cut out to be a beta tester. dry.gif

Linux, Firefox, but you're right, it's not working. The file I downloaded is only 1K in size, but I'm not getting the Forbidden message. Evidently, the permissions aren't set correctly.

I too have an Ambicom card. The network scripts are a bit wonky. I found that it's looking for the conf file to be named the same as the interface. So, if your device is wlan0 as mine is, try naming your profile wlan0. Alternately, try
CODE
mv /etc/sysconfig/netconfig/whatever-profile-was.conf /etc/sysconfig/netconfig/wlan0.conf
