I flashed my SL-5000D with a SL5500 Flash. Don't ask me how but I now have an almost brick. I got all these weird corruption messages and now when I turn on the unit, it comes up "INIT: version 2.78 booting" but it hangs there.

I can get a Shell by turning it on while holding down the OK button but I don't know what to do now to restore the device.

Can anyone help ?

Thanks a bunch

Did you press the reset button after you flashed (before you turned it on)?

Yes, I pressed the reset button. I have tried to reflash back to the older ROM but now when I try to flash, the green and orange light come on and stay on but never turn off -- not even after leaving it sit an hour sad.gif

I have previously successfully flashed the Zaurus before.

What did you flash with? An ospack or a zImage & initrd.bin combo?

In the latter case, you should be okay, in the former you're probably bricked.

Also, what are you trying to flash back with? A romimage, an initrd & zimage, or an OSpack?

If initrd & zimage, try also getting the bootflag.txt file from the rootfs toolkit (http://www.oesf.org/community/66.180.235.230/download.php/10/rootfs_20011119.tgz). Add it to the CF card before you flash. That probably won't fix things given the symptoms, but if that 4-byte file is wrong, lots of things won't work right.

However, it sounds like the updater program is trying to do the wrong thing (like maybe copy stuff off the end of your internal flash), which is probably because it is for the wrong system. Perhaps you can flash down the correct one, but if that hoses it, I don't think there's any saving throws left.

Probably your best be is to get one of the older ROMIMAGE files for the 5000d and try updating to that. They contain the updator program along with all the other executable stuff (diag monitor (collie), boot loader, initrd, zimage, bootflag.txt, and one or two others).

I'm afraid that doesn't sound good... there were some threads on the old devnet about this, unfortunately I know of no one who was able to repair it without returning to Sharp.
You could do a search for jtag... but you need the connector and it sounds tricky. This was a problem with the 5000 that was changed on other models.

Sorry

PatBob was very helpful in sending me an e-mail on how he unbricked his SL5000D. Unfortunately, it didn't help me.

I can't turn the unit On with On button.

I can't do the On+OK to get a shell now sad.gif

I can do a Reset+C+D and the green light comes on but it hangs forever (hours anyhow)

I can do a Reset+D+P and get a diagnostic menu. Says I have Version 3.10 :-( Guess I was successful in flashing to new 5500 ROM which is why I'm hosed...

So has anyone tried the JTAG method or know of someone who has?

I've read of people having done this before, a search may turn up the posts (as I don't remember what the outcome was).

However, I'd be willing to bet they had to send them off to Sharp to be JTAG'd.

When my 5000D died after an incorrect flash. I removed the battery (and of course the power) for half a day orso. After putting back the battery and powerplug I was able to flash it again with a correct rom this time wink.gif

This happened a long time ago though.. So I can't remember what I did wrong to freeze my zaurus.
