Hi folks -

I read on a website today that by renaming the Debian ARM binaries to .ipk, these can be installed on the zaurii... is this also possible under pdaXrom? Can I install apt on pdaXrom and use that to install from Debian ARM repositories? What are the caveats?

TIA,
Stac

well, .deb files aren't exactly .ipk files which are just .tgz files
however, you can extract them using ar or convert them to .ipk using my deb2ipk tool
some of the converted binaries run on the sharp rom, whereas some dont because of libc dependencies. however, it it more likely to run on pdaXrom than sharp rom since the libc version in pdaxrom is closer to the debian one.

some can, most can't.

Caveats :
- debian arm uses glibc 2.3.x, pdaxrom uses 2.2.5
- softfloat difference

If you search the forums for "debian on pdaxrom", you'll find a way to launch debian apps in pdaX. You'll need some space though. My experience with this is that it works very good! The apps use the optimized X-server and are faster than through X/qt thanks to this. I've been running gnumeric this way as well as the pdaX-version, there's hardly any speed difference.

Chero.

Meanie: ipkg has two formats:
- old one (tarball gzipped)
- new one (ar which is the same as Debian package)

Anyway I don't know which distro on Zaurus other then OZ use new format.

Are there any plans to get pdaXrom to the place where it can use debian packages? Wouldn't it suddenly open up a vast array of new software and appeal for the rom?
