What was talked about a while back (and I believe what has been done with iPod mini microdrives) is locking the drive firmware into "True-IDE" mode. I'm just speculating that this is what Hitachi has done, but it's consistant with the reported behavior and it's what I'd do if I were the Hitachi engineer tasked with stopping microdrive canibalization.
The CF standard actually defines three different types of card interface: I/O, memory, and True-IDE. The primary difference (without getting into too much detail) is how the 50 physical CF signals are utilized. True-IDE is a remnant of the early PCMCIA days and was designed in to make it easy to build a "glueless" PCMCIA to IDE adapter. Solid-state CF memory cards and retail microdrives provide both the "memory" and "True-IDE" interfaces. Memory is the simplest so that's what the hardware in most digicams and PDAs is designed to support. True-IDE mode requires some additional hardware logic and a matching device driver. Most laptop PCMCIA controllers support True-IDE, many USB-CF adapters do, very few digicams do, and no StrongARM/Xscale PDAs that I know of do. So by tweaking the drive's firmware to disable memory mode (but leave True-IDE mode intact), you render the card inoperable in most cameras and PDAs. It will still work fine on a host with True-IDE support - but how many people are going to rip apart a $250 MP3 player just to add a measly 4GB to their PC or laptop? Don't expect a workaround any time soon as it really is a hardware limitation. |

My 43B works fine, howeever, I have a quick question.
I can't seem to backup to my 4g microdrive or install to it. I have gotten to the point that I put movies and other stuff from the internet on it. It seems as if the Z doesn't see the memory there. When I d/l things to the SD drive I always try first with the CF - and it says "not enough memory." I know there is tons of memory there. I installed the muvo with these directions I found here. http://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...ic=3779&hl=muvo I never have any problem with the Z not recognizing it, or using files from it like movies and such. Would that be a Z problem, a Cacko problem? or just a newbie unix user problem? Thanks alot! lareya |

Here is a shot in the dark that hopefully someone can back me up on. I don't have a 4 gb CF drive but I do have a wireless CF NIC and a 256 MB SD, I once had a problem DLing stuff becuse my Main storage memory was close to full .. or posibly it ran into the bounderies of my interneal memory .. If DLing with your zaurus is a big thing try something like wget or an other program that you can be in more direct control over ..

I returned the 45C that I purchased, got a 43B, and lo! it works! Thanks for everybody's help on this.
So, to answer my earlier question, it was the model of the microdrive, not the 750.... |

Question.
Is the 41C, 42B, etc. the last part of the barcode for the muvo or of the microdrive (ie. do you have to buy it and then take it apart before finding out if it's compatible) |

the three digit code is located on the line under the barcode, so unfortunately yes, you probably have to buy it. If you're buying from somebody who has the drive, they can probably tell you...

ouch - so you have to buy it, take it apart and check - then, if its the wrong kind - reassemble and take it back.
Sounds like a bit of trouble. I've also heard that the new muvo's all have the non-usable ones. How are people getting these things? From ebay? Or are people still doing this at all? |
