QUICK HOWTO:
Hardware: Nokia 6630 Nokia DKU-2 USB cable 1- plug the usb host adapter to the zaurus (i got an error message about port 2 but it seems to work out of the box) 2- plug the Nokia DKU-2 cable 3- plug the Nokia to the DKU2 cable you'll have some messages about umodem0 and ucom0 at umodem0, meaning the nokia modem is detected (out of the box!) 4- have your favourite /etc/peers/provider created on mine, i had to comment "usepeerdns" and some other options not recognized by openbsd pppd... anyway first line should be /dev/ttyU0 in my case, i had to manually enter my provider 's dns address in /etc/resolv.conf 5- create the ppp0 device with : ifconfig ppp0 create it seems i have to do that on every reboot 6- then pppd call provider will launch the connection! and tail /var/log/messages to see when your IP address is successfully set! --- useful page which greatly helped me: http://tamentis.com/doc/orangeppp/ |

Thanks for the handy tips.
I see that DKU-2 is for most existing Nokia models. So does this method also apply to the newer phones as well? There is another cable DKE-2. Will that also work the same way? |

Today I tested usb connection with my Sony Ericsson W800i using its original USB data cable. dmesg recognized it both as a modem and a mass storage device, so i guess the phone can function as a modem right away, although I don't subscribe to data service for now.
If the USB OTG on Z does run at full speed (12Mbps, not low speed 1.1Mbps) then it shouldn't affect data transmission rate in 3G network, which is less than that. |
