So, I installed pocketworkstation on my SL-6000 a few days ago, and it's pretty damn nifty. I haven't switched back to qtopia even once. So, that made me think- if I've got full blown debian installed, why do I even need Qtopia etc. anyway? So.. is there a way I can install Debian, but not have it run on top of the sharp rom? I'm pretty familiar with debian, but not with how everything on the zaurus runs - if it can be done, but is pretty difficult, I'm still willing to give it a shot.

The openzaurus gpe rom is running X as its windowing server. Maybe you could modify it to run Debian...

My thought--and I havent tried it--still waiting for 6k--
is to install the smallest x based openzaurs thing possible. This m ight be better itf we went in steps 1st install gpe see if you can't chroot /mnt/card/debroot-- kinda like you'd do in XQT (check out the forum on XQT btw) in this instance you can run apps in pocketworkstaio using the cru or crd (I forget which command as well)If it works and you don't want all that gpe stuff then: then reflash insatall a minimal x bases oz from the bootstrap image. do the same thing. (less overhead) where I really want to go--if I can do it- is to use the apt and dpkg packages in oz to do a straight forward debian on gpe--that is install gpe, use gpe ipks where they work and/or exist and use dpkg and apt and dpkg-redirect (and debshrink) to installl debian apps onto a card.. all as one system rather than a chrooted system-- a zaurus is a pretty small environment to be running redundant systems The issue here, If I understand correctly, is that openzaurus stuff is better optimized and likley to be much faster (and philosophically a really good way to go) unfortunately there aren't many gpe apps, and many of those don't really work. the solution, of course is to run open embedded and make your own system--very good if you can a) figure it out rather daunting, really Pocket worksation works, but uses vnc which will cause problem in media playback, games, etc. it can be run through xqt for an attempt a t a best of both worlds. - a test of media and game performance might be worthwhile here, though of course one has opie or qt apps to run in that environment as well it might be nice to do an inrtegrated system using the best of both. I am also trying to download and run openembedded...... we'll see... |
