Pdax On A C1000, Any Suggestions?, Considering a return Options

I've been away from all things pdaX for ages now, all the lack of direction, progress and bickering got tedious, anyway ancient history.

However, I'm giving my Z one last hurrah while I stump up the money for a clamshell UMPC.

I've a C1000 and these are my wants, needs:

basic pda stuff
Word processor - openoffice would be awesome, but that never seems to be available for the Z outside of Meanie's great add on to Cacko which I currently use.
Spreadsheet - openoffice again would be awesome.
(Anyone know what happened to the lightweight openoffice they were developing once upon a time for pda and low power pcs?)
I'd really like to run apache, mysql and php.
A decent editor to code with.

Now my linux skills are still very basic, my brain isn't one that copes well with faffing.

What would be the best version/set up for me?

I suggest you try pdaxii13 v2(alpha5) so that you can run a lot more packages(those for rc10, rc12, beta1, beta3, r121, r198 for example).
Install is easy : install "pdaXii13 Akita build 5.4.9 base" and upgrade to pdaxii13v2 by installing pdaxiiv2-upgrade.

Everything works out of the box.
I don't think there exists an openoffice package for pdax. Good alternatives are Abiword and Gnumeric.
For pda use, you have Kdepim-pi like on Cacko(Kopi, Kapi, OM-pi, pwm-pi), the Pimlico suite (dates, contacts, tasks), the gpe suite, each of them are also available for x86 desktops.
Apache, mysql, php : I don't know but I guess yes.
Code Editor: SciTe, geany, vim, emacs, may be others

I don't think so.

I would suggest staying away from OOo. Abiword and Gnumeric are on the cusp of being usable as is, and they're not heavy like OOo is.

And a lot of the time when I press the on button the display pops up for a second and is gone again.

And changing the time crashed it totally.

Sorry these are probably very silly issues. lol

Ah-- you should suspend before closing the lid. I'm so used to it I'd forgotten.
also press and hold a little, maybe? load and rebbot if you are having those issues--they will go away I think.
BTW suspend is a little slower than on cacko- you have to wait a few secs to be sure you are suspended--that is, I bet< where your issues are coming from

Yes, there are still hic ups with suspend/resume(2.4 kernel related apparently)
Suspend is slow, you need to press and hold for about 2 seconds the ON/OFF button, it's bearable. I never use suspend from the menu, I feel it's buggier, and always suspend while lid open. Then you need to wait at least 10 seconds before resuming again otherwise it pops up for a second and then goes away. In this situation, you need then 2 other tries before it stays on.
Resume is slow, you need to press and hold for about 2 seconds the ON/OFF button. Fingers crossed, it always works for me. May be because I first open the lid to be in the same state as I was when I suspended and then resume by pressing ON/OFF button while lid opened, I don't use a screensaver either and I eject my wifi card before suspending.
I never have issues when changing the time using the Date&Time setting app either, screen goes black after 2 seconds until I tap on it, that's it.
You can use the command line to change the date and time it's something like

date -s "28 NOV 2007 02:06:00"

If you do this, screen stays on and you don't need to tap on it, it needs 1 second to update the time in the panel.

I presently use Debian, which suspends wonderfully and resumes nicely ... programs vary just like with the other options.

I like pdaxII13v2 verry much. It is stable but very slow on my c1000. Maybe I want to try debian on my device. But It is stable ? Is it also slow on a C1000 ? Is it easy to install on a SD with dualboot ? Thx for the reply

I went back to my cacko nand image, pdaX looked good, a really good job has been made to tidy it up and tweak it into submission, well done Meanie and all involved, but ultimately both environments that it has have major drawbacks.

Debian sounds interesting, mainly because it's a fully fledged linux distro, surely that would suggest it's far more up to date than pdaX will ever be? no?

I've only got a 1gb SD, would that be enough to give it a whirl?

Is there a gnome-lite of kde-lite that runs on the zaurus? I'd really like to have a decent window manager that behaves properly.

In an ideal world, for me, Apple would make a Mac book mini almost as small as a Z with Leopard running on it. With Leopard on my Mac I'm spoilt and find lesser OS a trial lol. Another reason why I like gnome, similar cleanliness.

I use my Z as a mini-laptop. Debian is stable on my C1K, and runs at about the same speed as PdaXrom 198 ... slightly slower than PdaXii13 (Better power suspend and resume).

Thus far only dual boots with Angstrom, Altboot method. U-Boot on the C1K does not dual boot friendly in my experience.

Am curious, if debian is better speed and resume wise, why even bother with pdaX anymore?
