QUOTE(iamasmith @ Jun 29 2006, 07:54 PM) Any particular Linux variant? OZ GPE 3.5.4.1 runnign 2.6 Kernel shows this card as eth0 and the device doesn't support the IOCTLs necessary for hostap_diag (although you can run iwconfig so it does see it as a wireless card). -Andy Ok i loud up windows xp, and tried to flash it, first i tried to not make the driver to load the RAM firmware (pm010102.hex) and the (rf010804), by disabling the Firmware Download in the option, (couldn't get card to be shown by WinUpdate.exe) i tried the original CD driver with the card, the same results, i tried to patch the driver to not load the RAM firmware and i got it to do so, the results are the same (winupdate.exe couldn't see it). anyway i came to the point (i'm sure now) the GW-CF11X dosen't have a firmware in its flash at all. under Linux it's obvious to see how it works (it loads the RAM firmware to the card using the hostap_fw_load secript to call prism2_srec in gensis mode and download the RAM firmware). The card PLATFORM is (0x801d) means the Secondary Firmware should be start with SMxxxx.hex. to see the platform you can use winupdate.exe in windows or hostap_diag wlan0 in linux. some Senao NL-2511CF Cards are PLATFORM 801d depend on the version (1 or 2) of the card that's why i think your card not the same platform. at end, there are some solutions to make the card functional under OpenBSD: make the wi driver to load the firmware to the card i have seen something about loudfirmware but not sure how to do it. The other option is to find the FLASH firmware for this platform and flash it with it, which i don't think so it will work with this platform because it's a Small Serial based (i've seen many post regards this on mail lists). more info: http://home.eunet.cz/jt/wifi/Download.pdf Could one of you guys talk to one of OpenBSD devolopers to look at this card? |

OK the final replay
i just finished the payment on ebay for new Ambicom WL1100C-CF ( 53 AUD$ + Shippin'). i had enough with PLANEX CARD!! QUOTE Prism3 based card without flash. It's supported by the CVS version of the HostAP driver for Linux. To make it work, the primary firmware should be loaded, then PDA (card's individual data) is read, primary firmware is patched by that data and loaded again, and finally the secondary firmware is loaded. After that it works just like other Prism based cards. Should be a good choice for those who don't mind writing a 3 line script and keeping the firmware on the hard drive. ref: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/DlinkDwl520 and http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/ope...04-04/0354.html also i have found this during the search that the following diffrent brand cards are identical IODATA WN-B11-CFZ manfid 0xd601, 0x0010 [ http://www.iodata.jp/prod/network/wnlan/2004/wn-b11cfz/ ] PLANEX GW-CF11X manfid 0xd601, 0x0010 [ http://www.planex.co.jp/product/bwave/gwcf11x.shtml] NOTICE! by using RAM firmware you just using your computer resource to do what the card should do! My advice to anyone looking for wireless card you should look for Atheros Chipset cards ( i couldn't find CF with Atheros Card) but i mean in future or diffrent medium like PCMCIA, mini-PCI or PCI.... ATHEROS ROCKS! And yeah stay away of those cards mentioned above! (PLANEX and IO-DATA) unless you only going to use Linux and not bothered by firmware loading and lost resources with bugy power control! (OpenBSD support IO-DATA the USB Version WN-B11-USB) Thank you guys for the help and thank you so much Andy you were soo helpful. and i'll see you in another post for another problem |

No problem Hus, I understand your frustration with your card but I think you are being a little hard on Prism based cards in general.
My Senao card is a great card to have and it is Prism based. Anyway, have fun with your new system. -Andy |

Anyway, have fun with your new system. -Andy yeah i understand your point BTW, Ambicom WL1100C-CF i ordered is PRISM based, what i'm saying is that the Atheros cards dosen't have a firmware which gives planety of expermintation plus security tests For example the NAV (within Virtual Carrier Sense) exploit implemented by some researchers faild in practical because of the error correction within the PRISM cards firmware (you can work it out in Atheros and i belive only with Atheros you have full control over 802.11 Layer 2 (MAC)). and yeah PRISM are good too ( some PRISM CARDS has the test mode) which i belive it's like a gate to magic things with wifi physical layer level i just like Atheros (maybe i used to it or it dose what i want) for me HAL within OpenBSD plus this Atheros card [ http://www.ubnt.com/super_range_cardbus.php4 ] == Wireless wonders! |

Yes, it's either find another card that is supported or write the PRISM3 firmware loader for that card for OpenBSD and get hold of the firmware files to load onto the card. It probably behaves just like any other PRISM3 card when the firmware is loaded into RAM but I'm not sure how it will behave with suspend/resume.

Hi,
I just ran into the same trouble. After following this thread, it would probably the best for me to get a new wireless, too. Or did happen anything new in this respect during the last half year? QUOTE(hus @ Jun 23 2006, 03:55 AM) Good day everyone
i just installed openbsd on sl-c3200 (the easy way i'm using cacko 1.23 rom) from the console i unmounted /dev/hda3 then start (fdisk /dev/hda) and deleted the FAT partition then i added 1GB FAT partition type [c], then the rest of the disk type [a6] OpenBSD after that i mkfs.vfat the /dev/hd3 and mount it to /mnt/hda3 and switch to there and grabed all the packages of the snapshot (base39.tgz ..etc) using the wget ( i did that to use disk installation, i installed the openbsd ipk on cacko and just followed the installation proccess my problem now when i plug my wireless card it gives me this error CODE wi0 at pcmcia1 function 0 "PLANEX COMMUNICATIONS INC., PLANEX GW-CF11X Wireless CF Card, " port 8x0/64, irq 137 wi0: init failed : unable to read station address any idea guys what todo now? do i have to install the wireless driver (Hostap) or firmware? if so where to get it from? the GW-CF11X card has prism3 chipset, and yeah by the way since i'm new to openBSD where to tweak make file? i mean the compiler option to use xscale insted of arm optimization thanks |

Just saw it on ebay - how was your experience with this card since then? |
