Hello All,

I wish to post and remind every user of pdaXrom that the folks at pdaXrom.org have worked very hard to produce what I consider one of the most exciting things happening with the Zaurus today.

The work they have done is not trivial. The idea of running FireFox, GNUChess, Thunderbird, XPat2, and many other favorite X11 apps in my palm with a wireless connection to the Internet is, well, absolutely "Sci-Fi" to me! I am an old timer (43 years old), and I remember running X11 on a DEC MIPS workstation over 9600 baud! In my mind, my SL-C860 running pdaXrom is a "technological miracle".

I bring all of this up to politely remind everyone that the developers at pdaXrom have done all of this wonderful work on the "honor system". They operate on the belief that if you appreciate pdaXrom, you will show your appreciation with a donation. How many of us will waste $10 this weekend on 90 minutes of Hollywood entertainment? How many of us will buy $20 of over-priced coffee this week? How many of us know that pdaXrom makes an $800 Zaurus worth the price?

So. I post now to make a challenge to each of you. If you run pdaXrom as your Zaurus ROM every day, please make a donation! It is easy to do.

In my opinion, the folks at pdaXrom have totally earned it.

Tim.

what do people think about a web page on the cacko site... for a "bug bounty" ? where when the bug is "fixed" .. an amount will be donated *to* *cacko* -- not the bug fix author.

?

I'm willing to seed the bounty -- if anyone else thinks this might be a neat idea.

example: exult .. compiles, runs... but there is "scrolling" corruption under the mouse pointer. Fix this and cacko gets $100 ...

this way, people can put up different amounts on differnt bugs -- things that are important to them or worth it to them....

$10 here, $10 there? could make a difference. I'm trying to make a donation every other month or so.

Lets keep up the support!

Scott

I would be DELIGHTED to donate 20 bucks a month if someone could tell me how to get my WCF11 card working with this rom. Any takers?

gnarlog :try "cardctl ident" in a term then just paste the informations you get for your card (product info ans manfid) in your /etc/pcmcia/spectrum.conf or hermes.conf adding either bind "spectrum_cs" or bind "orinoco_cs" ... try to find out which works with your card .

Extend this concept to "feature requests" and I'd make use of it.

I will gladly donate US$100 to see the Cacko QT environment running under pdaXrom (it was rumored that sash was working on such a beast).

These are all great ideas. Myself, I would just like to see a bug parade like Sun's Java site. Then we can vote for the things we want done first. That way, if you wish, you can still tie your donation to your bug fix/feature, but the developers have a clear idea of what people want done first regardless of their donations.

But lets not get lost in the details here. Let the developers know their work is appreciated. Make a donation now!

Hey Time and everybody..

On behalf of the team:
Thanks for all the kind words and all the nice comments we get in the forums and on IRC.
We are currently working hard on making the next pdaXrom ready - it will include a lot of bugfixes and many new features/improvements. There well be support for onscreen buttons, better "mouse" implementation, improved settings programs, improved hardware support, better window/display acceleration, new functions and much, much more.

So we hope you can get some of your "problems" solved with the next release which also features some totally new things i'm not gonna reveal yet :-)

At the website im currently looking into making a function for donating for a specific bug/feature on the buglist - that way people can also help us rate what they think is the most important bug/feature.

Hi laze,

IMHO an important functionality for the bug list would be to be able to add comments to a bug.
Some submitted bugs have immediate solutions/workarounds but there is no place for submitting these.
See the xcalc bug for instance: the submitter have posted a solution to the bug as another bug (in a different category).

Of course there is a risk that the bug reporting tool will be use a bit like a forum.

Why not use a forum to discuss bugs? Maybe even have the bug reports link into the forum threads?

There is a great solution to bug tracking, it is called Bugzilla. It is quite popular, everyone at least heard of it. It is a really nice tool specifically tailored to handle bug reports and to work on them. I would highly recommend at least evaluating it for possible use. When I tried it for myself, I found it the *best* solution compared to any other available.

On the donating: I would make a donation, but I really don't want to mess up with paypal. It is known to be quite a hostile thing, visit nopaypal.com for the gory details. It there another option for donating? All I have is a credit card, no paypal account or other obscure stuff.

As far as Bugzilla, I think one should look seriously at all alternatives first. The zilla is know to be overly complex. There are many choices out there. My favorite is Track+.

In reality, it is quite simple to install and to use. The only thing that looks complex enough is the advanced search function. No one is forced to use it though, there is a simplified search available :) What I enjoy in it is how it makes the job done. It is very attentive, careful and pragmatic about it.

But of course, one should not embrace anything without looking at the alternatives first =)

We currently don't want to installl bugzilla - i will add a comment function for the bug report system real soon now ™ :-)

The bugzilla is so complicated and furthermore i like to have control over the stuff - so i generally build all the php/web from scratch. More work but better and faster bugfixing and better understanding of the systems.

I will see if i can get the comment function working today.

A good idea could be visit pdaxrom website every day and click on each of the google ads on top. It takes 1 minute at maximum and costs nothing.
Btw i will donate more time and some euros and so should do every one using the great work these guys do for us all.
