Linux vs. Unix

Both are hackable and both are nice.

The apple is really unix? not locked down in some horrible way? I'd go with the open source Nokia, personally. Support open source and get more open source-support apple and get more......itunes?? I like some of Apples designs, but they are pretty dictatorial--and worse when they have more marketshare.

The apple is really unix? not locked down in some horrible way? I'd go with the open source Nokia, personally. Support open source and get more open source-support apple and get more......itunes?? I like some of Apples designs, but they are pretty dictatorial--and worse when they have more marketshare.

I'd go for the Nokia any day.

The iPod Touch is hackable only in the sense that you have to be a really good hacker to do anything. It's like a Palm -- you can hack, but tools for hacking are NOT provided (but unlike a Palm you can't install anything else...).

The iPod Touch is basically a fancy iPod with a web browser and MUCH less storage space. Yay. You can't add calendar entries unless you do it from a computer. Yay. You can't install anything else without much hacking (which has to be redone every time Apple releases a firmware 'upgrade' unless you want to stick with the old firmware). Yay.

N800 for sure. You can actually, you know do stuff with that. Unlike the iPod Touch, which is a fancy media player.

I'd argue the the N800 has the iPod touch beat on just about every front (SD cards can give it as much if not more capacity), plus AFAIK it is a good media player, runs a good OS, and isn't crippled.

I think each SD slot is defined for a maximum of 8 Gb each (using SDHC cards), so you can get the same amount, not more (ie 2 SDHC slots = 16 Gb maximum). But still a better buy in my opinion.

I am replying this thread using the newly acquired iPod Touch.

From users' perspectives, this insanely tiny gadget suffices to meet normal users' Internet access via wireless LAN connection.

Of course, there are ample rooms for improvement.

Looking forward to seeing Mac subnotebook developed in this format.

I am replying to this thread from my new Nokia N810.
from users perspective, this insanely tiny and powerful gatget more than suffices to meet normal user's internet access via wireless LAN, bluetooth connectivity by GPRA over phone with BT, USB connectivity with GPRS over phone.

The N800 is the same as the N810 sans the keyboard and the built-in GPS on the N810.

the multimedia playback is good and for some apps also have inertial scrolling like the iPod Touch.
and right now i am replying thu BT high speed data connectivity thru my cheap BT phone.

You can add and edit your calendar and contacts entries using iPod Touch.

Apart from the showmanship factor for both devices .. on a serious comparison note - we have to give Apple the credit for raising the bar of what a Cell phone ought to be and for the excellent UI.

But having said that - between the iPod Touch and the Nokia N800, the N800 beats the touch out of the water.
In fact I would compare the N800 with the Iphone - where excepting the GSM phone , the Nokia IT excels in every other department.

The Nokia IT (N800, N810) can do Voice theu Voip excellently - Skype, Gizmo, Gtalk, all supported.
Connectivity they Wiwfi, And Bluetooth and USB cabling (Ipod touch only does Wifi and has a crippled Bluetooth)
Open platform on the Nokia IT - much more open than Appale can ever make the Iphone or Touch to be (SDK or no SDK)
GPS and hardware keyboard on N810 - well even though thread is about N800, the N810 should also be considered.
Excellent battery life of Nokia IT's - I have it running and connected to home Wifi for 2 days running (always on state).
Some software does the Iphone UI experince vis-a-vis Intertial scrolling etc (its not device centric though like the Touch - Apple beats the Nokia IT's here. Many apps on Nokia does have finger support though.

Browser experinece is the best - Flash support included (and not only UTube like the Touch or iPhone).
Memory expandibily theu SD/MicroSD card support and slots (2 in N800, 1 in N810).
Replaceble battery in Nokia IT's.
Larger better screen on the Nokia IT's (I held my N810 beside an Iphone and the N810 certainly looks better).
Inclusion of external speakers on the Nokia IT (in fact I play songs off the N810 on my car while driving with GPS on ..dont know if Touch has it)


Feature for feature - the Nokia IT's are a much better deal than the Iphone or touch.
