I'm interested in trying Cacko, but I don't see anywhere obvious answers to the following questions:

(1) Which of the original Sharp Apps are included with Cacko? All of them? Or were some left out to save space?

(2) I have plenty of stuff on my sharp ROM now like address book files, appointwents, and whatnot. Assuming I do NOT have a PC to sync with to get the data out and then back in after the change of ROM, what is the best way to preserve such info if I switch to Cacko?

If anyone can give me answers, or tell me where to RTFM, thanks.

I had the same question and installed both ROM’s to check them out. The main Sharp apps contained in the full rom are:

Address Book
ToDo List
Calendar
Text Editor
Hancom Word v1.6
Hancom Sheet v1.7
Video Player
Music Player
Voice Recorder
Photo Storage
Presentation
Image Pad
Email
Netfront 3.1

However these are available for download if you opt for the Lite and wish to install some or all of them later.

There are a lot of other apps in the Full rom but hese too are available for download and install. I think USB support, amongst others, is included in the Full but keep an eye on this thread for more info

As for backing up/restoring, I use tkcBackup to deal with the data files. Otherwise it is a fiddly business by hand.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your comments.

So by the looks of it, the following are not present:

Calculator
City Time
Clock
eDict

No big loss, then.

Is Java on it?

And the usual Settings programs?

What about qKonsole or some other terminal program?

'yes' means it is in the ROM:

Calculator - Yes
City Time - Yes
Clock - Yes
eDict - In the feed
Java - Jeode and Personal Productivity for Zaurus are in the feed
qKonsole - Yes
Settings programs - yes

Note: based on my installation of Cacko 1.23 full.

Thanks. Then its not really lacking anything. I guess the only issue now is getting my address book and appointments / to dos across.

I note there's a tkcbackup demo. Anyone know whether this might work for a one shot transfer of my data from sharp to cacko? I suppose its only $15 to buy, anyway, if it really will do the trick.

Another silly(?) question. If I flash the ROM, does the RAM get zapped too? Or are the contents of flash RAM in general kept? IE, would my application data like address book and so on not need backup and restore anyhow?

Your data gets wiped.

The Sharp Backup does a total backup of the system, my last b/u before flashing the Cacko was 56Mb. Which is heavy going if you just want to keep your pim data safe.

The tkcBackup allows you to select files, e.g. just data, which is usually only a few K.

- I'm not of the opinion that you can restore a Sharp backup to Cacko. I don't use tkc anything, so can't speak for that. Given their 'ware it's probaby just a front-end to tar. (smirk)
- You could test a tarball ... if I recall Sharp puts everything in the dtm directory, maybe under /home/QtPalmtop, but I'm not precisely sure. Look for it and you'll find it, or search the Forum ... I'm sure the location is available somewhere.
- Anyways, use your normal backup to save where you are. Remove fastload from any PIM apps, like address and whatnot. Go to root in a command window and tar up the dtm directory. Delete the contents of the dtm directory. Untar the files back. See if the apps can read them. If it fails, restore your backup and all should be back to normal. If it works, you can save your tarball on an SD or some such whilst you reflash, then lay down the contents into Cacko's dtm directory.
- This is just an idea. I've never done this, so I don't know if it will work. I personaly prefer the KO/A-PI suite, and that's simple to back up. Just copy /home/zaurus/kdepim to SD ... flash ... install KO/A-PI, copy kdepim back to /home/zaurus. Done. Just like Linux should be, it is.
- If you decide to give KO/A-PI a spin, it's able to "sync" with the Sharp data store. You can install it, then "sync" it to Sharp, and all of your data will be in both places. If you have a process that depends on the Sharp data store, just set up a routine "sync". If, like me, you don't care about Sharp's data store once you're in KO/A-PI, just delete the dtm directory. It's wasting space if you're not syncing to it.
- Hope this helps...

Thanks for this hint. Sounds pretty plausible...

Just to clarify, the tkcBackup of my data made under the Sharp ROM restores perfectly under the Cacko 1.23.

3 taps on the screen does it.

- Roit! But a backup made with the Sharp backup utility will not restore onto Cacko with the Cackup backup utility.
- tkcBackup could be worth it to buy just for that. Or one could just use tar, which comes with the system for free. (shrug) Or gtar, which is supposed to preserve permissions better, but has to be found and downloaded. It's up to ralphrmartin (which are you, ralph or martin? [wink]) to decide if he wants to use the command line for free, or pay for GUI?...
