 Zaurus 6000 / USB HOST / IPOD |

Did anyone try to attach an Ipod to the zaurus 6000 USB port ?
According to the specs, it looks like the ipod could serve as a nice 40 GB drive to the zaurus. I did not buy a zaurus yet, but this argument would be a killer. |

I just realized that Ipod was not USB but firewire... where's my head.
However did anyone try to attach a USB device like mp3 player as a big hard drive ? If so, which one ? What about digital cameras ? Is there some list of devices somewhere ? |

iPod does have a USB adapter available.
But it is mainly a firewire device. And not to my knowledge they haven't done it. |

The New Ipods are both USB and Firewire. They attach to the CF USB card. so should work with the 6000, but you might need usbstorage, and the scsi modules (sd_mod, scsi_mod, etc.), and I can't find a HFS+ filesystem, though if it was reformatted FAT for a PC it should work.

The usb mass storage driver modules are already present in the 6000 ROM.

The iPod does support USB-host but it has to be software enabled by the connecting device. In other words, I don't believe you can you just plug it in and see it... sorry

hi,
i use my iRiver 320/340 as an external storage device and it works great. just plug and play. since the iRiver acts like a hard disk with its own power, it is a lot better than using a microdrive which just drains the battery. and of course, you get a lot more storage! (but do use the option to disable USB charging on the iRiver before connecting) /bazmi. |

After seeing this post I tried hooking my 30GB Series2 iPod up. Just like a thumb drive... I was able to mount sda2 and it worked beautifully. However, the iPod aparently looks for power on the USB port to determine whether to display the do not disconnect message after unmounting the drive I had to suspend the device for the check mark to appear on the iPod...

I have the old Archos AV 340 which mounts right up with no problems. It essentially is a 40 Gb laptop harddrive with a screen and a powersupply. I can transfer all kinds of files back and forth without having to install any software. And it has a 3.3 mp camera as an accessory. It works like the worlds largest digital camera, but I will never run out space for pics.

I don't suppose anyone's tried this with a 3x00? The 6000's USB port seems to provide more power than the 3x00 series, which means that some non-powered hard disks will work with the 6000 and not the 3x00, but since the iPod has a battery, I would think it would work.

yes the 3100 sees the device and puts up the do not disco, but, this is a big but, it looks like its charging, which is NOT a good thing.
did this with an ipod mini showed up in fdisk as /dev/sda1 /dev/sda2 hope this helps, btw is it really charging or is this just what goes on when it sees that its plugged in? This would be nice as an external hdd for my movies, but dont wanna burn up my z. |

I just added some more information about using iPods with the Zaurus to this thread. Whether it will charge from the Zaurus depends on the model you use.
