QUOTE(rebski @ May 16 2006, 03:51 AM) http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/16/sony-ge...io-ux-micro-pc/ http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/assets/i...qs=ar_ux_teaser I had a few months ago a U70 which was nice, but was lacking a keyboard. This model solves this problem, and I would have definitively bought it if the battery was not only 3h30! (I know there is an extended battery, but I also know how bulk it will be just as it was on the U70). Common Sony, I have just ordered a Panasonic Subnotebook which delivers 12h battery lifetime! So yes it seems nice, but no it will not replace my Zaurus. Note also that the formfactor is also quite different from the Zaurus (550g, size, ...). |

But what a beautiful device. It does have the things I would love in a next generation Zaurus. Very nice! |

for that kind of money, I could afford a ultraportable Laptop.
$1800 is an obscene amount of money for running Windows XP on a small footprint device. I cant believe that adding Bluetooth, Wifi, a solo core chip (if not some other equally performing one), more RAM, ROM etc will make the Zaurus double expensive than what it is now. (and we dont need Windows XP and its license costs to be added unessecarily) So how come these device mfrs make these ultraportables so expensive just to provide the capacity to run a full-blown XP on it. gr8ful, where di you find that it runs Linux too ? |

Was it written somewhere, I mean I can't find it anywhere... http://www.geekstuff4u.com pre-sale this Sony and offers Linux as base system. That does not mean that this device will run linux. In fact I am sure it will, because it's quite like a standard PC, the only problem might be the touchscreen support. U70 ran linux fine. |

QUOTE(nilch @ May 16 2006, 01:42 PM) The Geekstuff4u site ---> http://www.geekstuff4u.com/product_info.ph...products_id=371 The 'Available Options:' under operating system show the following options: Operating System: 1) LINUX PACK/OS FREE included 2) English XP OEM (+$128.02) 3) French XP OEM (+$128.02) 4) Spanish XP OEM (+$128.02) 5) English XP PRO OEM (+$192.03) 6) German XP OEM (+$140.83) 7) Italian XP OEM (+$140.83) 8) XP PRO OEM Multilingual (+$217.64) I assume this means that some version of Linux OS is offered free with the product. I found no other information than this. This is one pricey unit, but I want one anyway. |

This device is very cool. It is not for people having trouble with there bank account every beginning of the month
It's the best UPC available out there I guess. It is small enough for most common use. Just not enough for your pocket... put we are not there yet, are we? |

It's not really that much bigger than a Z clamshell: Sony ---> 150.2 x 95 x 32.2 mm Zaurus -> 124 x 87 x 25 Won't fit the shirt pocket but will the pants pocket. A bit heavy though (520g, 1.23 lbs). |

QUOTE(brashley46 @ May 17 2006, 08:39 AM) QUOTE(gr8ful @ May 16 2006, 03:29 PM) Over half a kilo is a bit much to hang off my belt ... and the pants pocket would get pretty stuffed with that, I can just see big bruises on these 60-year-old thighs. The OQO is around 420g and I find it damn heavy to hold with just one hand for a longer period. Now 520g would be like holding a heavy brick. I always thought the OQO sucked because it was heavier than the Z. |

Pure surmising on my part, but I wonder if this might provide Sharp with the necessary spur to produce the Zaurus that we all wish for.
They could probably afford to sell it for a darn sight less than the Sony. Just found this cool Japanese interactive page showing GPS capability and much more. I can only go by the pics though, those who who ead Japanese will glean much more. Also check the links under V Vision. http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/Concep...l?product=typeU |

It is a backpacker for sure and I read that it had a 5 second start time. I assume that it's from a suspend.
This is not a zaurus replacement because it is not instant on or small and light. Would it be able to wake-up and remind you of your next meeting? I guess with some tweaking it might. Might this take away some zaurus users? You bet. There are a lot less compromises on the operating system and hardware, but it is a much easier to carry than a even and ultra portable laptop. I wonder what heat issues that might arise. |
