busted my screen accidently, i think the backlight is str8 but the screen is most crack-ed. i'm starting to think i might have to try an figure out how to get a new zaurus sl-5500, becuase the name brand screens are so expensive!
it did serve well the 3 years i had it. so then it hit me, "hey maybe theres another manufacturer of a screen that 'would' work" but alas, it doesnt seem this way. or maybe its time to upgrade to a new model? so one more question! is milkytracker running on any of the other zaurii, an if so how much do those usually go for, cuz i really dont want to pay much more than 200usd. i would really like to stick with something that has a cf 2 &/or sd slots. thankyou, in advance! -rahn |

Hi,
I'm not sure where you are located, your profile does not specify. I bought my first 5500 on ebay, and one sound channel did not work, and there is a slight (not sure of a correct word to use) issue with the screen, that is hardly noticable. I think it might be an attempt to remove a scratch on the screen by the previous owner. I was going to return it, as I ordered another 5500 on ebay, but I dropped the stylus on cement, and it broke. Then I started playing with different ROMs, and decided I'd keep the extra 5500 to use to experiment with stuff, without making my "main" 5500 unusable, etc. And, it was nice to have the extra cradle, power supply, and battery, in case one failed. At this point I never use the other 5500, and it works perfectly, other than the sound channel, and the very slight artifact which looks like it is on the external glass. I can try to take some pics of it, and would be willing to let it go for cheap, and/or some SD cards, CF cards, or something else in trade as well. I would want to keep the accessories, and possibly the battery though, so let me know if you are interested. If it wasn't in a case, it would just be collecting dust! |

You may also want to move this to the for sale and wanted forum, to increase
your odds of finding a suitable replacement screen. |

I posted a question a long time ago, probably in the 5500 hardware forum, asking if anyone has ever had and cured this problem. I opened up the unit, and the jack is very hard to get to, without taking a lot of other things off. I thought it might be just a bent prong on the jack, but the way it is mounted on the board, I gave up. I then remember seeing someone post an audio problem, possibly with a Cxxx model, and it appeared to be one of the ICs. I will try to snap a picture of the screen soon, but my camera is only 640x480 so I am not sure how well that will work out... If I forget, reply or PM me in a day or so, to remind me. I have a lot of other stuff to do today... |

Hi,
I would need a decent digital camera to be able to provide a picture of the LCD screen that illustrates the issue with that 5500 LCD screen. It took me about 15 seconds to find it, that's how insignificant it is. There is a very slight "buffing" that appears to have been done, probably in an attempt to remove a tiny scratch by the previous owner. It seems to cast a shadow onto the LCD panel a little bit, slightly darkening an oval area about half the width of a pencil eraser, and about as tall as one. In the 2 snapshots below look for a slight darkening within the boundaries of the "Opera" icon... It is near the top right part of the "O" in Opera. By the way, I forgot how simple/stable/predicatble the SHARP ROM was, as I have not seen it in a while. I loaned this to a friend for a while, and he did not even take it out of the case.

QUOTE(cho1ce @ Sep 16 2006, 09:21 PM) no kidding! i had actually developed a mark in the same spot on my zaurus. lets continue this with pm. Well, some of the info we have been discussing might be valuable to other 5500 and other model owners as well. Since you said you developed a mark in the same spot, and the previous owner of that 5500 said he never noticed the spot, I have come to the conclusion that it is the result of clicking on the Opera icon! Therefore, I would suggest all 5500 owners to periodically re-orient the order of the icons, as there is probably a pressure-induced marking that can occur to the screen, by repetition. You also never told me your location, I really hope it is in the US. |

Well it seems cho1ce made me an offer on mine, then stopped responding to PMs. I
think I'm going to put that 5500 (with only one channel of audio from headphone jack, and hardly noticable screen issue) on the for sale forum here. I have not decided what to do, as far as keeping the battery and charger for spares but I will tonight. |
