I've been meaning to try this since your original post. Since I first read it, I've wondered: are there different kinds of transparency available? In particular I'd like to find a non-shiny matte transparency that doesn't reflect as much glare as the nushields.

We had a box of the 3m brand transparencys - They aren't really matte but work quite well even in direct sunlight (I wrote a report for my boss last weekend sitting in a campground table).

They do scratch pretty easily but with the excellent backlight it hasn't bothered me much.

Maybe this is a little late, but I just bought a thin plastic 8.5 x 11 envlope, which you would use in a binder for .69 cents and cut out a bit that fit my z6kl's screen.
It works very well.
My z6kl came with a plastic flip screen. I bought it through Amazon.com.

I _don't_ use a screen protector (other than the flip screen). I guess it depends on what one does for data entry. Since I use a Pocketop IR keyboard for most of my data entry, I don't scratch around on the screen much. And I really like the "clear" view without a screen protector. I have had my Zaurus since April, and not a scratch yet (knock wood).

Mark me down as swimming against the current as well. I've had a Palm III since '98 and have never used a screen protector on it. Any scratches on my screen are VERY minor, and it looks pretty darn good for something that has been in daily use for almost 5 years now.

Go look in the downloads area, under "other cool stuff". A while back I created and uploaded a template that you can just print on overhead transparency film and cut out. I've been using one for months now.

I went do the download area and downloaded the pdf as you recommended but regardless how I setup the print settings on my HP 1220 LJ it printed about 2mm all the way around smaller than the viewable area was on the screen. It wasn't a total loss however as it inspired me to keep trying my own hand and found a size myself that did work for me. (I have a terminal case of scissors hand cramp though.) The fault was probably was in my wifes Win2k printer setup as it acts as our home networks print server.

At any rate the end product does NOT float around the screen and has zero dust particles trapped underneath. It is perfectly responsive to the stylus...seems to actually make tapping easier than before. If anyone is interested I used a transparency sheet of Office Depot Black and White copier transparancies. It was the best brand I could find that didn't have noticeable yellow or grey tinting or subtle streaks in the manufacturing finish. It also reduces glare a LOT, not sure if its an anti-glare component or if I was just lucky. Either way I'm breathing a LOT easier knowing my screen is safe.

I took a piece of transmarent plasic like for a report cover cut out a rectangle 85cmx61cm could be mm not real good with metrics. It then will slip up under the case at the top and bottom and holds it in place. The 3M film might be better but I just used what I had.

Also tried on of the Concept Kitchens protectors that I had left over from my Palm III but I didn't like what it did to the screen, made it a little blury looking.

I didn't use a protector on my 5500, and two years later the screen's scratched to shit.

So, inspired by this thread I've just tried the overhead acetate sheet approach on my old'n'scratchy SL5500, and it works beautifully (10 minutes of trimming later). Used a box of Sasco overhead projector acetate's that I had lying around in my office (got 'em from a previous job, and they've been sat in a drawer in my home office for the past 10 years!). Works fabulously - not only masks scratching, but the stylus tracking actually works better with it fitted.

Doing the acetate will be my first move when my SL6000 turns up next week

i know that this device has a 4" display diagonal,
so i can compute the height and width via pythagoras,
but in general there will be some kind of additional margins.
can anyone post exact dimensions for a display protector.

4*4 = (x*x) + (y*y)

if the screen is 640x480 and you assign x to 640, then y = 480/640*x = 0.75x

16 = x^2 + 0.5625x^2
16 = 1.5625 * x^2

x^2 = 10.24
x= 3.2 inches or 8.13 cm
y= 2.4 inches or 6.10 cm

@byzantium: you are surely right with your computations, but
but displayed dimensions in general doesn't mean dimensions
of a corresponing screen protector, look for instance at the 5500
or 5600 device. there are some black margins, which have to be
considered, if you want them also to be protected. maybe i will
add some mm's to each side and order a screen protector with
the new measures.

as ethereal said: doesn't anyone use screen protectors?
