Hi all,
I've been contemplating an AV604 for a while now for use as a video player. This thread has commanded my attention. I thought until now that this was a great product. I don't have a 16:9 camera, so I'm left to wonder: is this goofy display-cropping problem going to occur if one were to view commercial widescreen format movies or is this some weird interaction with the cameras? Any thoughts? It does seem that Archos has distinguished itself with dreadful disregard for their customers. It's a shame that creative people can have their work besmirched by arrogant management. |

Well,
with no word from anyone to convince me otherwise, I've decided that the potential upshot from owning one of these 604s is trumped by the risk of having a premature and unsupported product from an unresponsive company. I don't have the budget to just try it and see what I get. I do ultimately want to have a widescreen format player, but I think I'll just wait until the market settles down and the true winners emerge. Oh well......

Any thoughts? I bought my AV500 a year ago, justifying my purchase with my need for a stand-alone storage device for my digital photos (Canon 20D, or anything else). Of course, I did not need all the features of the device, but I have enjoyed them. I have about 80 videos on my AV500. As I type this, I am watching Andrew Lloyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera" (2004). Though I have noticed sometimes some cropping on the top, it usually isnt' noticeable. What's more, I can control the dimensions in my ripping software (FairUse). What I am wondering is what display setting people use on their device? The default is Auto, I suppose. The other two options are "Maximized Image" and "Original Picture." |

I find Original Picture to often suit best.
With this setting I ensure that the whole film is being displayed, while with the other options, when playing a dvd-ripped film, it maximises on heigth, thus cropping the width, which for my poin of view isn't acceptable. Just my 2 cents, ymmv |
