Any hope for gnome as a ui option on pdaxrom 198 or pdaxrom ii13?

You want to run Gnome on your Zaurus? Like the full WM/DM/Nautilus/etc.? I don't think it has been compiled. I've thought about it a couple of times, but never got around to it. Maybe if enough people show interest I'll give it a shot (no guarantees, though).

Aren't the memory requirements for GNOME an order of magnitude beyond what the Zaurus can provide?

If KDE runs on it, I would think Gnome could be made to do the same (I get the impression they have similar requirements).

I presently run Gnome on Debian EABI, its just about as responsive as most of the wm's I have tried that I like. For the most part its cool. A few more seconds on loads but not a heavy amount. Just was looking for gnome for the pdaxrom, a buddy wants to have gnome without the debian process.
Can post screenies of my present desktop  Free seems to show about the same memory use as with xfce4.

Well, it is compiled in the debian arm and armel distributions. I tried it in armel (and also in arm, sort of by mistake), and found that while it would run, it certainly slowed the machine down -- and for little benefit, IMO. I would recommend against it, preferring a lightweight window-manager like icewm. You can still run whatever gnome apps you want without chaining the little guy to the floor. |

All a matter of preference
I personally don't like the look of the real light weight wm's. I have a palm if I want spartan looks The fun for me of having debian on the Z is running it like my laptop at home, which has gnome on it. Would go with xfce4, BUT its broken in parts still ... |

You can make Fluxbox or IceWM look a lot like other WMs. It's the really light ones (twm, EvilWM, etc.) that look barren (EvilWM is especially nice for small screens).
You're entitled to your preferences/opinions, of course. |

Ah, well then how do I make icewm look more gnomish? and what program would I use for the backgroun (desktop) ... I must profess an ignorance to configuring any wm's other than KDE, Gnome or XFCE.

Find a theme on freshmeat that looks like gnome to you (or make your own, sorry, no tutorials), then apply it. I think IceWM has a desktop setter, but I don't remember what it is called. You can always use Feh to do that (just add it to your .xinitrc with the command line option to use the desktop).
HTH EDIT: Just saw your screenshots, and FVWM2 might work for you as well (I have seen FVWM screenshots very similar to yours). I've never really used FVWM, so I can't help with it, however. |
