Various 860 English/Japanese questions Options

Hi Stubear,

I have some questions on your automated script to convert the C860. How do I get the script to be executed within the Zaurus.? Simply copying and rebooting?

I am struggling to identify the terminal program on the Zaurus CD-ROM. Can any one tell me what the name of the programm is and where it is located.

Any help will be deeply appreciated.

Here is my conversion script, it was designed originally for C760, but has been tested on C750 and C860 also.  

Basically it converst a stock Japanese rom to use English menus by removing the qtopia translation files in /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja/  

Note if you install a program after runnig this script that comes up with Japanese menus - for example Zten and portabase - then just remove the <package>.qm files from this directory and the package will change to English menus

There are still a few places that have Japanese left, I'm still working on getting rid of these.

For the best results you will want to download and save to the same folder as the script the following files http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/libsl.qmid and http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/movieplayer.qmid

If you prefer to have Japnese style time and date (along with a few Japanese prompts) then there is a section in the script you will need to uncomment.

It needs to run from the console as root. I can't remember the name of the file on the CD, but I think it was embeddedkonsole.???.ipk or some such, if you can't find it you can always use qkonsole or any other console app available from www.killfiz.de/zaurus

thanks for your reply. At least now I am sure I have the terminal program on the C860. I am however uncertain as to the format of the executables. My problem now seem to be running the executables on the C860 and doing a proper reboot. Hence, as always, I'll be grateful if you can spend some time to answer the following questions:

1. What is the appropriate file format of the terminal executable? There
are various formats of these programs. Which is meant for the C860
machine architecture. Further, these programs are downloadable as
archives. I could not transfer the entire archive onto the Zaurus but its
contents. The "qkonsole" app comes in two flavours: a
qkonsole*_arm.ipk and a plattform independent one. Which specific
app in the respective folder do I have to install?

2. How do I reboot the C860 properly? Simply taking out the battery is
too tedious. Is there a hotkey combination?

3. There is apparently a jap/english conversion program on the conics
page called"mcvonvert" which should be installed on the CF card. I
have done that, taken out the battery and re-inserting (reboot) but still
nothing happens.

1. You want the ipk - that is the default package for the zaurus - install it through the software icon on the settings page or find it on the doc tab and double tap it to open the software install proggie.

2. The second last icon on the start menu is the reboot (kinda green circle icon) click that then choose yes to reboot

3. Did you actually install the app or just put it on the CF card? you need to install the app through the install proggie or the command line - ipkg install <package>.ipk

I've gone through the first stage of the conversion. Wonderful machine the SL-C860. Thanks a lot for your help. I wasn't getting the right pacakge across to the C860. Now that I've gone through the first hurdle every thing fits in place. Some few questions:

1. It is mostly converted - approx. 90%+ - but ocassionally one gets the squares/rectangles on some menus. How can I get rid of this?

2. What is the best way to add blue-tooth functionality to the C860? Do I necessarily need to have a blue-tooth CF/SD card or will a
software update be okay?

3. How can I get wireless connectivity? I guess here I will certainly need a WLAN SD card because my CF slot is already in use.

1. Did you use my script? I've never come across boxes in menus, had red boxes in text input areas - that is cause it's trying to show kanji/kana with English fonts, hit the japanese button next to the space bar, the icon in the taskbar should change from a squiggly cirle (Japanese A) to English A

2&3. AFAIK the C860 cant use SD Wlan and bluetooth devices so you"ll need CF based WLAN and Blutetooth, there is no onboard WLAN or bluetooth so you'll need a device - ie software upgrades wont help.

Oye, I made a mistake in purchasing a 1GB CF-card. I should have taken a 500MB SD card and reserve the CF slot for bluetooth and WLAN.

What are the consequences of swapping CF cards? Can I simply take out the CF card without loosing info? Maybe I should consider selling the CF card and get an SD one in order to free a slot.

Please, forward me your script if it is different fro mcconvert.

I think than some of my script was used in the mconvert.ipk, but my script is the one you quoted at the top of this page, just cut and paste the text and save it to the Z, give it a good name and run it from konsole.

My script is designed to allow input and reading of Japanese, so the Japanese fonts are left behind - if you want an English only option the try the tkc Rom os Cacko Rom, they have pretty eye-candy and are only English - no red boxes around.

You can swap SD and CF cards without losing data, if you click on the icon of the CF card in the bottom right corner, it will pop up a box saying eject card.

If you get an error message saying cant remove card then you are running an app from the CF card - this will need to be closed first.

I swap SD/CF cards all the time - I have one 256Mb SD card filled with dictionary files that I need at work, on the train going home I swap it for the SD card with games on it

I don't think I'll need jap input, so I'll probably try other ROM versions.

Mybiggest worry now concerns the 1GB CF card I got. I am a bit reluctant to sell it because of it's size and speed. What is the issue involving SD WLAN cards and the Z. There are certainly some SD WLAN cards in the market. Do you think that in due course someone will come up with the appropriate driver software that will make it possible to use SD WLAN card on the Z?

Hmm, Interesting, the script wwas correct on the old forum - must have lost the \ during the cross over.

The script on WBDC script is an same script that was copy/pasted into the forum here. I think I might have changed the default of deleting libsl.qm in the one here.

I'll edit the original script (the formatting looks all odd now - too much spacing) to correct the sed line in case anyone copies it from here

Try embeddedkonsole-tw, it doesn't suffer from the Cancel key probelm, it also has support for Big5, euc, jis, sjis and UTF8 charsets. Doesn't have as many font selectinos as QKonsole but the charsets make up for it for me

It supports about 75-80% of the Jeode features - the evm script is a little flaky and I've generally had better luck calling cvm directly. The biggest problem is that it doesn't have great Japanese support, there is a really cool app called babbletower (Japanese dictionary and flashcard app) that I can't use on Java ME cause it doesn't handle japanese fonts properly - it also has problems with selection indexes.

I am struggling to install an app on my C860 that needs a java VM. I can see evm is installed, but somewhere the application tries to call cvm and fails.

How can I resolve this? How can I install a VM that calls the cvm commands directly? I thinkI do need something called jeode to get things up and runing, but where do I get it?

I would suggest Sofmap in Yurakucho. They sell used Zs as well.
I usually use Bic Camera in Yurakucho because of their points program, but the prices are not the lowest. The other choice is just about anywhere in Akihabara, but I would recommend Sofmap used units over the stuff in Akihabara.
