Picked up a USB host cable for my C3100 and tested it with my MP3 player - connects fine and I can read from it no problem. However, I can't read from the SONY Memory Stick in my digital camera. Which was my main reason for getting cable....argh!
It shows up in the System Info applet, but it isn't recognised from the command line. I presume I need a driver, but I'm not sure where to look. Has anyone else managed to hook up a memory stick in this way? Thanks, Mark. |

Is your mp3 player seen as a mass-storage device? Some cameras require drivers to be seen as mass-storage devices (like my Pentax Optio S).

Yeah, it shows up under the USB tree in the Device tab of System Info.
Doing fdisk -l /dev/sda shows me the full capacity, that it's FAT32 and on /dev/sda1. Then using mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage allows me to browse it from the Files tab. If I connect my camera I get "Sony DSC" under the USB tree but fdisk doesn't report anything at all and it refuses to be mounted. Looks like I need some libraries, but I can't seem to track anything down. |

probably not what you wanted to hear, but there are some small and cheap card readers. Couldn't you use one of those until you find some drivers?

Yeah, tried that too with no luck. Got a couple of card readers, but I can't get those to mount either - not even to read a Compact Flash card that is formatted ext2.
This is driving me nuts! |

It may be that although the camera is a true mass-storage device, it has unusual/non-standard 'devs'.
I think this is the issue with my Pentax, but I have a card reader so I've never had to bother to get it running. Try googling for 'Linux AND <camera name here>' e.g.: http://www.raubacapeu.net/people/yves/help/usbdscp1.html Si |

Cheers icruise, I like the look of that so I've ordered one. Short term it should solve any problems I have (well, hopefully).
I have tried Googling for what I need, but I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to libraries and modules so I haven't come across anything that fits what I'm trying to do. Or should I say, I haven't found anyone who's done it already and documented it in easy steps that even a simpleton could follow! |
