Hey Guys,
I'd like to propose a possible change to our Wiki setup. As most of you have seen, we are very prone to spam on the Wiki. I've been having to do almost daily scans and changes to the pages because these spammers are killing us. I love the Wiki option, but it's honestly getting out of control. The other day, I stumbled upon a CMS that I think might serve our needs well. http://www.geeklog.net After inspection and use on a couple of my sites, it seems to be the Slackware of the CMS world. You can create pages and make it so that a group of people can edit them. So basically we still have our Wiki abilities, but this time if you want to edit you have to ask to be part of the group. It also has some extra managerial things that I think we could benefit from. I know that we can lock the pages on a Wiki, but as far as managing it it's not really organized at all. If you guys could check it out, let me know what you think. If you want to see it in action, check out: http://www.ws2g.org .. There are some other excellent sites using it as well, such as http://www.delta3d.org . I really like it, and if we were to use it I could just make it so that the Wiki user database uses the database from this forum so there's no extra signing up or anything. Anyways, please let me know opinions. I'd like to have a discussion about it and then eventually, depending on what the concensus is, draw a poll. Thanks Guys, Roy |

Hmm, I'll look at that one. I like Geeklog because it also lets us manage other things easier. Not that I have a problem with Wikis, but I just think it'd be easier to just manage who can edit the files. It takes 3 seconds to PM me and just ask to be added to the group of users that can edit them, but it'll save me tons of time of combing through the Wiki weekly making sure there's no spam.

I don't have much experience with Geeklog, but I have found a combination of
plone, zwiki and epoz, all standard debian packages to suit my needs very well. It can be set up so that only authoirized users can edit folders/pages and the WYSIWYG functionality is nice. I have a zaurus 3100 wiki evolving on my site which may be a good example of what can be done. I find it so convenient that I keep work logs on this type of system. http://greenant.net/portal/greenant/wiki/Zaurus3100 If you like the look of this wiki, let me know and I will dig up my installation notes, I think it was fairly straightforward and I have notes on how to make it private too. Frank DZ- I'm not sure what your looking at will really end all our problems and be that maintence free. I was actually just looking at zeigerpuppy's site before I even saw this thread and really like what he's doing. Might be worth looking at and if he's interested maybe pulling him into the mix here. I know I'm not as active here as I should be maybe the extra help would benfit the site as we all seem to have our hands full with life in general. Just my 2 cents if it's even worth that Jim |
