Problem With Kapm-idled, uses too much cpu Options

I notice my zaurus seems a bit sluggish so I opened up top and kapm-idled is using too much cpu. What is wrong with it?

I've noticed that too. If I understand correctly, kpam-ilded is a part of the 2.4 kernel & we can't be rid of it. Others might pipe in that have a better understanding.

And even if you could kill it, your Z would probably freeze & require a reboot. Like I said, it's a necessary part of a 2.4 kernel based ROM. The only way to be rid of it (that I know of) is to upgrade to a ROM that uses a newer kernel (like 2.6). I'm not to familiar with the 3100's; I know that there's currently no 2.6 support for my 5600. I see your using cacko. Why don't see if they have a 2.6 kernel based ROM? Or check out OZ? HTH

This is no problem. kapm-idled is an "idle" process: a process that only operates when other processes don't. The moment anything else in the system will need the CPU, apmm-idled will leave the CPU.
So you don't need to do anything.

kapm-idled is only used in kernels of version 2.4 and upwards. Most recent distros (since around spring 2001) use kernel 2.4 by default. To see the kernel version that you currently run, you can use the command 'uname -r'

This has been addressed numerous times on the forums, the onlyu way to get rid of kapm-idled is to stop your kernel (ie shutdown the zaurus)

If you would prefer not to see it in top, then you will need to find an updated version of top that "knows" about the 2.4 kernel changes

what is idled?

it's a very low priority process which runs when nothing else does, and runs the IDLE instruction, which tells the processor (CPU) that it can shutdown certain functions, and thus sames power.

if you want your Z to consume lots of power, why not download the distributed.net keycracking program dnetc and watch your battery run dry really fast!
