Hi
I'm working on a woodworking japanese-english dictionary. I started to edit it with winXP but would feel better to work with Linux. Which distro can allow me to type Japanese? I'm sure a Japanese distro will make it possible, but I'd feel rather unconfortable with a Japanese interface! If that's possible, is it as straight forward and user convienient as with winXP? Ludo |

Almost every linux distro I've used has support for Japanese (along with Korean, Chinese, French, Russian etc etc etc)
I favour SCIM and Anthy, but Cana and kinput2 have been around for years and years (at least since 1995 when I first tried Slackware). What distro do you currently use? If you aren't using linux yet then try one of the live CD/DVD distros first to see what you like. Stu |

Hi Stu,
I'm using knoppix, but it doesn' thave this support. Indeed after a bit of research you can get Canna and kinput2. How about your distro? An interesting link about Japanese inputs: http://penguinppc.org/~hollisb/linux/nihongo.shtml Ludo |

An interesting link about Japanese inputs: http://penguinppc.org/~hollisb/linux/nihongo.shtml Ludo I use gentoo and as I mentioned before I prefer anthy via scim (emerge scim-anthy). Knoppix should have support for scim as it's debian based and I know that debian has scim-anthy as a package. Have a look at this site (http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/jpninpt.html) for a great overview of some of the Japanese input systems available. Anthy and scim have the advantage over canna and kinput2 in that you don't need the canna server to run. hope this helps some Stu |
