Well, after a bunch of research, I finally kknow all I need to know about swapping out a hard dirve (hardware-wise), and I'm finally ready to use the charge card, but when I hauled out the link to pricewatch, no one I could find actually had one in stock! I did see the Amazon posst, but I felt that hugely inflated price was too insulting to be borne, I can't go that way. I'm really hoping that someone here knows of a source ... and I would even consider used, although for used, I'd want to be able to put off paying for it until I could see that the drive actually worked.

BTW, yes, i did look at the Seagate 12Bg, the ST612712. From what I could see, it's not the same size as the ST68022, but it's so close, it might probably work, but it's not available from anyone either, and not slated out until 3q'06, and I don't want to wait 3 months. Of course, I would LOVE to be proven wrong! G'wan, show me up!

Funny, all the vendors listed through a C-Net Shopper search show it as in stock. Currently, the best price would be from buy.com @ $146 /w free shipping. I can vouch for buy.com, but unfortunately not their choice of shipping courier: Fedex mad.gif

I just bought one at Costco for $119. It happened to be in a Gigabank USB2 drive from I/O Magic. I've just popped it out of the case and tried putting it in the Z's CF slot. It doesn't want to be recognized. Looks like I'll have to do some more research to figure it out.

edit: FYI the drive is a Seagate model no. st68022CF, 8GB ST1.2 Drive.

edit Again: Looks like this is one of those IDE mode only drives. When I put it in the CF slot of the Z and I get a bunch of DriveReady SeekComplete errors. Also on the drive itself it says "For Embedded Applictations Only". Oh well, Looks like I have an 8GB USB drive...

Why can't you just replace your Z's internal 4gb with the 8gb? (I'm assuming it's the 3100 in your sig) The Z's internal bay, IIRC, is one of those IDE mode ones-- as is the drive. Then make yourself a 4gb usb hard drive from the old one-- or better yet hold onto it in case the 8gb craps out.

Didn't realize that. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it works.

EDIT: Looks like it won't work in the internal slot either. Same DriveReady SeekComplete errors. Bummer. Oh Well, I needed a new thumb drive anyway. wink.gif

That's a shame-- sorry the suggestion didn't work.

I'm still pretty sure the Z's internal is IDE mode though (They use those OEM only drives, like the iPod etc., AND there's an IDE controller chip, if my memory serves) but something else nasty might be at work on that drive. Someone should start a listing of known working replacement HDDs. Once I get some time off school this summer, maybe I will. I've got a box of MicroDrives here from old mp3 players, might as well try to put them to use on my 3200.

Please bear in mind that if this card is being purchased to replace the internal Microdrive many people have tried it and it has caused failure.
