I saw the BestCrypt request, but thought I'd request something better.

EncFS [1] allows a regular user to create, mount and use an encrypted filesystem transparently.

It uses FUSE [2] (Filesystem in Userspace) which I heard is already compiled in some kernels, although I'm not sure which.
