hello,
just a small update about Outliners on the Zaurus: I think a good outliner is one of the most important applications for a mobile computer, because it can be used for so many different things. All outliners I have found so far were either too limited or too bulky and slow. Some time ago I came across "Notecase" by Miroslav Rajcic. It was a great piece of software already, and I contacted the author in order to discuss some ideas with him. Over some months now we are in regular contact and he develops so intensively and implements so many of my ideas that Notecase will be a very powerful Zaurus tool soon! I will have to suggest changing the name from "Notecase" to "Universal personal information management tool" The author uses notecase on a Linux PC and a Windows PC, but not a Zaurus yet. So in order to enable him to optimize Notecase for the Zaurus and to repruduce the bugs reported by me, I am now donating him my SL-C3100 (have replaced it with a 3200). I mention this to show you how valuable Notecase is for me, and hopefully to other Zaurus users, too. I think by end of the year an already very powerful new release of Notecase will be available (I will create a pdaXrom IPK of course). There are already older versions floating around as IPKs, but I strongly recommend waiting for the next big release. Once Mr Rajcic got the Zaurus I think there will come another big release fixing some Zaurus-only bugs etc. So stay tuned! So far Notecase works only in pdaXrom. It is based on GTK+ and needs X11. It will also run under pdaXQTrom under QTopia I guess, and probably also under Openzaurus/GPE. I will update this thread as soon as there is a new official release which is interesting for zaurus users. daniel |

Thanks Daniel3000!
I love Notecase and used it a lot when I first started using pdaXrom. I've got two recommendations for the author (if you're/they're interested). -An alternate (curses?) interface for the same data would be really appreciated so you can ssh into your machine and work with the data and not need X windows. -If memory serves me correct, the reason I stopped using it was if pdaXrom crashed while notecase was running or I forgot to shut it down before rebooting I tended to lose the data since my last save. |

However, 1.2.6 is a pretty outdated version But at least this shows that it is no problem to make it work on angstrom, too. thanks! daniel |

I'll forward it to th developer as a long-term idea. Don't know what he will think about it, though. The second one: Well, if you don't save before rebooting, you will lose data in most applications There are no entire system crashes anymore when using notecase on pdaXrom, however, there are some bugs which cannot yet be reproduced by the author, which let notecase hang on the Zaurus. But I'm currently using the develpoment versions for my daily work, and in order to protect me from data loss i simply press Ctrl-S frequently. A useful habit for a lot of programs. Maybe a backup file feature would be good, though. Will suggest that. daniel |

I guess because it minimizes to the taskbar, IIRC, I forgot to close it when rebooting. A backup file feature that creates a second file with a ~ in front would be handy (or something like that). Then when you start it up it could ask you if you wanted to restore from autosave. Just an idea. Hopefully I'm remebering all of this correctly.. |

Great job, daniel3000!
Pity that I don't really have the skills to join the dev work. Do keep up the job and please take up the packaging if you like! |
