I've installed gcc, but ./configure complains that the compiler cannot create executables. Looking in config.log I find that gcc cannot execute 'as', and sure enough, I can't find 'as' anywhere, not even in the feed.

Where do I get a Zaurus assembler from?

this could be it:

if you want a decent rom, try pdaxii3. that's the most stable X11 based distro.
