I'm kinda suprised nobody's asked about this yet.
For me, Plucker is a killer app, as I'm not usually within range of an AP during most of the day, and I'd love to be able to scrape my sites while I'm waiting in line for coffee or something. Has anybody managed to get the command line version of the distiller running onboard? If not, I'll give it a shot myself, but I don't know enough about Python to know where to get started. Which Z distro of Python am I gonna need, and which libraries? I suppose I should take a look at the distiller source... |

i tried a few times to get the java version of jpluck to run on the zaurus but was unsuccessful - this would definitely be a killer app for my Z. when im on the road i usually have wifi points near every couple of hours but i leave my linux/xp laptop at home and so onboard plucker would rock!

I had the python based distiller working on my Z a while back. I turned off the images because I didn't have the PIL library and I was expecting it to be slower than I really wanted any way. Apart from that it was very easy.
Just about any python version should work - I think I used a 2.2 version which required a small patch to the old plucker sources I was using but that patch is no longer required for the current plucker. |

Hi,
I"ve never used plucker, but it looks interesting. I'd imagine the distiller should work fine on the Z, provided it doesn't use any strange python packages. I glanced at it quickly and didn't see anything, but I did notice that it uses a bunch of conversion utilities (or at least could use them). You might have to spend some time compiling those or finding .ipks for them... As far as python goes, check: http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/zaurus/index.php for python packages. What format does the distiller put the web pages in? Wouldn't you need a viewer on the Z, or does it just output PalmDoc files (which the Z can read)? jason |

I installed Python, Python-compress, Python-html and Python-webtools. When I started the parser it complained about traceback, linecache and warnings (unfortunately one at a time so I had to retry after each one). I just got the corresponding .py file from my laptop Python install (/usr/lib/python2.3 IIRC) each time and put it in /usr/lib/python (no 2.3 on the Z for some reason). After that it just worked. You do have to disable images unless you can get a Zaurus version of PIL (Python Imaging Library IIRC). I had already done that so I can't remember if it it sufficient to do it from the command line, or if you have to tweak ImageParser.py. Unfortunately I tweak the Plucker Parser to do some things a bit differently so it isn't really suitable for public consumption, but you should be able to follow this procedure with the standard parser pretty easily - I may get the current parser myself and do it again but I won't have a chance for a few days. |

I am very late in the game, but hopefully someone is still on this and can give advice.  Can you point me to the feed for downloading Python tools and other ipkg needed to run the distiller onboard a Zaurus 5500, with 3.10 SHARP rom image? Thanks! If this works out, then I can use the Zaurus without touching a PC (WindowsXP! grrr) altogether ... ok, I can install linux as well, but I don't own the common PC ... so ...Snappy! |
