we really need some type of music making software for the Z
i mean theres everything for the Z except this (well there is csound but its way confusing) the whole concept of module trackers for a long time was to use really small samples so this would be perfect for the Z!!!!!!! & since now theres massive storage space it gives the opportunity to be able to use even more & higher quality sounds than before. ive tried this past week and a half many different ways to get a good working tracker inside. but nothing has worked for me yet.......... so if anyone could or would be willing to help me i would really appreiciate this thankyou |

slapout,
It seems both are players and not trackers...bummer & to Terrorphile, I'm with you on this I think a tracker would be a fun production app that could work on the Z. I'm talking about smalls samples to, within 50-200kb each. I started a thread at: http://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...c=9185&hl=music I hope to try the FunkTrackerGold listed there. I imagine if a MOD player works on the Zaurus then a tracker should as well. |

Playing the mod is the hard part in terms of processing power etc. After all, the first decent mod trackers were on the st and amiga and if I remember correct they only ran at 30 mhz, or so. I guess the hard bit would be getting a usable interface to work with the small screen and stylus. Peter |

As mentioned in another post, CheeseTracker sounds to be the best bet for now. It's a full fledged tracker using Qt3. A backport to Qt2 shouldn't be too hard.
Reducing the UI to work on 240x320 is another thing though, although it probably would work ok on the VGA machines. |

Actually the first sts and amigas run around 7-8 mhz :-) Another thing that might be possible is to run an st or amiga emulator and then run one of their trackers. Not to sure how well that would work though. There's the Castaway Atari ST Emulator for the Zaurus at http://angela1.data-uncertain.co.uk/~zaurus/ although work seems to have halted on it. http://home.planet.nl/~woodl/ has a port of Hatari for pdaXrom I think mmhart.com my have had some amiga emulator stuff, but that site has been down for a while now. |

hey guys i was the guy that originally started this thread
i come to find something very interesting yesterday http://dwarfhouse.linux-box.net/projects/EwokTracker/ between then and now i havent really did anything to try to get a tracker on the z again because of my lack of programming skills but seeing this is giving me hope that there possibly could be a tracker on the z eventually |

For simple stuff you could try Little Sound DJ in a gameboy emulator.. I played around with this a couple of months ago..

surprisingly enough i was able to get it to work !
the input methods were way to cumbersome to really be able to do anything on the zaurus but it might be a bit better on an actual gameboy. i am looking into seeing if the dev for the Ewok tracker might be able to help me compile it for the Z and if so i will contact the good fellow that i think did hatari and let him know, because i think he might be possibly interested in this. at least he seemed somewhat interested in the begining of the fall in doing something with a tracker for the Z. anyhow i am really looking forward to using my Z as a musical device even if it forces me to finally get started learning to program |

I've compiled Soundtracker for pdaXrom, and some other goodies as well. Laze hasn't given me a developer account yet so I can't upload them just yet...

Dan is the interface usable? i think i may have had it working in xqt , but it was real hard to use because the gui was mainly off the screen. |

I'm working on this, as well.
Though, for me, MIDI is of much greater interest; since I can play MIDI on a variety of non-computer devices as well. (midi files are smaller than MOD too, although soft synth is more cpu intensive on the Zaurus...) With some limited success, I've tried: jazz jazz++ cantor shaketracker tektracker seq24 midimountain muse rosegarden Cantor, MidiMountain, ShakeTracer and Muse- I can't get to build properly at all. Most rely on ancient libraries, or compiler versions. Jazz (old) can't build, because I can't get the (old) wxwindows library (dependency) built to begin with. seq24 builds, runs, but bails out with segfaults soon after launch. The GUI doesn't look pretty, but may be useable, if fixed. (it also complains about missing a hardware /dev/sequencer . I'm unsure if this a fatal error, due to subsequent segfault) Tektracker seems to freeze when opening/saving files; it's possible I may have been doing something wrong, but the gui is somewhat wonky (its using curses) Rosegarden is bug-ugly, and too big for 640x480, much less 240x320. It appears to be fully functional, but crashes often. Worse, the widgets are too small to see and manipulate on a Zaurus screen... I get the feeling it was designed for 1024x768 at 21" Jazz++ lacks a score editor, but otherwise seems adequate to the task. The GUI is fine, on 640x480, and windows can be tamed to fit (maybe 240x320 even) The major problem, so far unresolved, is an issue of memory alignment/endianness when loading/saving. File opening works, with some corruption; File save simply segfaults. I've been poring over the code trying to spot the problem and fix it, but so far haven't had much luck. If any forum lurkers have experience with endian/alignment matters, and could shed some insight, or enlightenment, I'd love to hear from you, or work with you on this problem. So, for MIDI, no go, this far in worse, most of the ones I've tried seem to be long, long out of development. TekTracker may be viable (it requires some dependencies that aren't likely to be in your SDK- build them, or find an ipk) but I don't really use trackers. It also could have alignment issues; I really don't know. Rosegarden is useable if you're desperate, but I found it just too annoying. Jazz++ looks like it needs some help (maybe not too much more!) All this in X; but ttrk doesn't need graphics, and some of the others may work in QT as well. http://vektor.ca/audio/ttrk/ http://www.rosegardenmusic.com/ http://jazzplusplus.sourceforge.net/ |
