I always finds gems here and there on great ideas for enhancing how you use the interface. I thought it might be nice to have them collected in one thread. I'll post a few of mine and hopefully others will share theirs:
Being able to use the LCD softkeys and the space between them is great. I've mapped the space below the Book icon to toggle hiding the panel. Being able to hide the panel is useful, but trying to bring it back can be difficult sometimes, so in /etc/keylaunchrc.matchbox I've modified the following line:
Doing a lot of command line typing I get tired of the shift+"/" to get the slash. I use it much more than I use commas so I modified the /etc/keymap-2.6.map so it's the comma that requires the shift:
keycode 51 = slash comma
And finally I like to spice up the prompt with a bit of color, see attached screenshot, by changing the PS1 statement:
PS1='\[\033[1;37m\][\[\033[1;32m\]\[\033[1;31m\]\u@\h:\w\[\033[1;37m\]] # \[\033[0;0m\]'
What are some your special tweaks?

Anyone able to get USB networking to function?
IIRC, the 2.6 kernel & 3100 & windows don't work for some reason (this was true in OZ). But on my Linux machine (Ubuntu - Dapper) it doesn't work either. To make matters more difficult, the USB applet doesn't work, however the usb config files that are default seem to be set correctly.

I'm trying to get ROTT to run. It's a old favorite 3D shooter for those that may not have played it. It was supposed to have been a sequel to Wolfenstien 3-D. Linux port source code can be found here: http://www.icculus.org/rott/
It compiles natively fine on my Z but when the binary runs it crashes with a not so helpful
Rise of the Triad Startup Version 1.4
Z_INIT: 8950000 bytes
IN_Startup; Mouse Present
OH NO OH NO ROTT CRASHED!
Here is where:
I've looked through the source code, but I'm no coder so nothing jumped out at me. I've tried running the ROTT ipk that's in OZ when I've flashed to OZ/GPE and that binary doesn't crash, rather it hangs while loading the wad file.
To add insult to injury, I tried compiling ROTT on my Ubuntu/Dapper box and it fails on the SDL-mixer portion of the compile.
Anybody ever got this puppy to run on a Z? Any help would be appreciated!

I'm using mpd & ncmpc to play mp3s which is working pretty well. Only problems are:
The matchbox volume applet doesn't control volume. I have to run alsamixer to adjust volume. Is there a better way?
Also, I'm looking for a way to prevent auto suspend when I close the screen on my 3100. Is there a way to blank the screen & keep the Z from suspending so it can be put in your pocket while it's functioning as an mp3 player?

I'm trying to get xdm to run @ boot.
I added the following to the end of my /etc/inittab
I also changed the paths to the proper locations in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config & Xresources
However the /var/log/xdm.log shows the following errors:
xdm error (pid 1013): chooser socket creation failed, errno 97
xdm info (pid 1013): Couldn't connect to PRNGD socket "/tmp/entropy": No such file or directory
On the console the error is:
INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
What am I missing? Or is there a better way?
