Hey Coredump

I see there is another update on your site for the sl5500 rom, the last one from a few days back broke wireless, but I've been messing with the Z here and there.
The wireless card sometimes shows up as an anonymous memory card, so I have to eject the card and reinsert it for it to work. This is what happened on your first release, your second release completly fixed it, but it seems to be back now.
Basically it seems to work, locks into my network, even with WEP. but as soon as I connect to the package manager or anything requiring a net connection, it drops the connection, its like the card shuts off.

Could you include some more packages in your next release kind sir?

A web browser
Snes9x, mame, frodo (game type stuff) - maybe incorporate the script and front end to make the rom builds from a recent posting here.

codecs for mplayer (xvid/3vix/divx/.avi)
xmms works very well for mp3s, but i understand it can be used as a front end for mplayer?

I kinda got some wmv to work, but the framerate is about 1/2 and the voice is way out of sync, although the voice is not choppy at all.

Whats the best way you would choose to install these new roms, how would I wipe out the sd card to flash as I don't want my changes interrupting your ' clean ' rom and cardfs, perhaps you could put a requestor in to format the card before the install of the apps happens?

You're probably a really busy guy, but you've made serious inroads into this Z - thanks for all the work

Cheers,

Well..

I -very carefully- flashed my z 5500 to oz 3.5.2 30/30 this morning around 10am.
Here it is 12 hours later and I havn't been able to install anything. - nothing, and I'm not trying to install anything exotic, i'm following the docs on these forums just to get konquerer running.

Nada.. zip-zero-nilch. I do have a 512 meg lexar sd card in /mnt/card which is ext2 fs.

Been reading the forums all day long - there are just way too many dependancies with this flavor of linux. The package manager is near useless as it won't resolve dependancies and the Z hangs way too much.. I've had to cold start it several times today. Including taking out the battery - it all happens when trying to use the package manager files sort of try to install to SD but then the Z hangs and thats it. - sometimes I can restart opie, most times I have to shut the Z down completely.

Since these units are almost nearly identicle why isn't there a binaries repository ?

Please don't say rtfm, i'm a unix geek and a solaris/linux guy, this Z is about 2 steps from becoming chucked off my deck. This is way too much work to get a PDA functional.

Now OZ 3.5.2 itself is very nice, it recognized my Netgear MA701NA wireless card, its on the network, i can ping out from the Z and have been futzing around with command line ipk but I can't make this thing install.

I almost had frodo installed, but it crashed on a dependancy and the file won't execute.

Dead Z? Bad flash? OZ just way too experimental? - I appreciate all the work the OZ team has put into this replacement rom, their work is fantastic. but the roms a little empty.

Cheers all.. Onetrack

Hiya all,

I've been reading this forum for the past few days after stumbling onto it from a google search.

I'm soon to be the owner of a never used zaurus sl 5500, my wife picked it up on ebay for me as a gift (ive been bugging her for one for the past 3 years.. she finally understands)

My main uses for the new unit will be very light surfing, chatting mostly (is there a VoIP app such as skype?). I'll be using gaim to connect to my msn/icq/irc accounts, some very light email and probably some warwalking. I have a CF wireless card on order from my local computer shop

When i'm just laying on the couch i wouldn't mind a game or two, probably mame or some such.

btw here is the ebay win, good price ?

EBAY ZAURUS

What I would like to install on this new toy is:

Kismet
Gaim
Zmame
Konquerer embedded
a PIM/Calendar app
Java (Jeode?)
ssh/scp/ftp/telnet (i will have so much fun with this playing nethack or mudding)
some console apps, maybe lynx/links tongue.gif
Nomachine client (??)

I'm pretty sure from the ebay description that this will be a bone-stock / never used before device, probably running the earliest sharp rom there is.

Little background on me, I've been a unix sysadmin (solaris certified), played with various linux's, hp/ux and irix too. At the moment I have a WinXP box and a Suse 9.1 pro box, and I'm using NoMachine on suse as the server. I'd like to be wandering around my livingroom connected to suse.

SO.... before I run out of breath and bore you all (just excited i finally get to join the zaurus owners guild)......

Which Rom is for me?
Would a Lexar SD ram card (never intending on taking it out) be a good choice?
Can I use the zaurus while its docked or is there a wall socket adapter, as i understand it this device will suck its battery dry pretty quickly when Wlanning....

Cheers all,
Onetrackio (btw.. anyone want to donate me a c860 for testing?)
