if I set the screen brightness to maximum, the light flickers a bit (not annoying, but noticeable).

Is this a common thing?
Does it mean I have a bad one?

If you are overclocking then try at standard clock settings, some CCCR values result in the display clock being reduced.

I don't overclock...

I noticed that one day with my 3000 as well, though it seemed to still brighten and dim a bit no matter what the backlight setting. It only occurred that one day, though.

I've noticed something like that with AC adapter plugged in. The reason was hidden in the DC jack which had poor connection.

Oh yes, I have exactly that.

I didn't have this "feature" with my previous C3000 which had to be replaced for a different, more serious, problem. I'm so glad to have my C3000 back that it doesn't bother me. On mine it's linked to hard disk activity, which is noticably loader on the replacement C3000. If I lower brightness by one notch then it goes away. Also seems a bit dependant on which my 3 batteries I use.

I don't think it means you (or I) have a bad one. Just that we're both near one end of the statistical distribution of screen flicker. Others have no flicker, but could have other problems lurking in their machines...

I will adopt the atitude: "if it ain't broke then don't fix it!"

You do have the option of complaining to your supplier, but no guarantees that any replacement you can get will be better.

Yup, mine has that too. But only on MAX brightness, one notch down is perfectly fine.

Further investigation showed that the real reason of flickering is different. It reliably appears when CPU heavily loaded (say by gcc) for about a hour. After some time after load is gone flickering are also gone. So, I guess this defect related to overheating of some component(s) inside Zaurus. The ambient temperature in my tests were about 28C.

I've noticed the flickering at max brightness with my C3100, but only when drawing power from a usb port (using a P to GO USB->power jack cable). When using the supplied ac adaptor, the problem disappears.

It doesn't seem to occur when using the USB cable with my C760.
