I have thekomapny rom on my 5500, and I really like it. It seems to be very clean, and I like that the crystal icons are built right into the rom... no need to waste time changing them.
Overall, I'm very impressed!

Yep, took all of two seconds to setup. I'm using wifi to sync with my win2k laptop. Works perfectly every time.

I just added the files to the download section... I wasn't mirroring the older thekompany rom... I'm just now posting the zImage files... you may want to wait for both before re-flashing to the new rc4 version...

Nope, Proto had a problem where the community.zaurus.com site refuses to allow a project download file that was 13mb. He's posted/posting it to several mirrors, which I presume he will be setting up a table of links to. Several mirrors were offered, and I know at least one (http://myzaur.us/tkcrom - one of mine, with 3mb/s and 20gb space) has been populated with the files.
I'm sure that once Proto has gotten the mirrors set up he will post a list of links to the initrd.bin files, probably both here and at the zaurus.com/dev forums.

I flashed tkc rom a couple of days ago and I like it fine, just one thing bothring me: I couldn't get it to accept zbedic, my favourite dictionnary, it just doesn't accept the file as ipk package.
Any suggestions, or has so else tried it yet?
I had openzaurs 3.2 before and liked it quite well, but as the project is still stuck with the old kernel, i had to move forward. On openzaurus, zbedic worked fine (same file).
Thanks in advance for any help...

Will this work on the 5600? I read one post on the tkc list where it was mentioned, but lost the post. Also, is there a way to back up the original Sharp ROM since they haven't posted anything yet for the 5600.

I just flashed my Z with thekompany ROM everything is wonderful, amazing, but the sync part is another history. Every time I click on PC LInk and change de connection from "USB - I/O (default)" to "USB - TCP/IP (advanced) and then press "OK" it crashes (hangs), and to make it worst it doesnt save the setting. So in other words I cant f***ing, sync.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

If I remember correctly, on 3.10 ROMS and all dirivitives of the 3.10 ROM (thekompany ROM, cacko, etc.) they switched from using FTP on the Z to using Samba for connectivity.

Is serial sync (with Outlook) supported on the tkc ROM (or the Sharp 3.1 for that matter)?? I'm still using Win NT on my work computer, which does not support USB. The serial sync-ing works great, but I'm still on Sharp ROM 2.37 because it works fine. I bought the Z mainly to sync with outlook, so the serial connection is pretty important to me.
I'd *like* a newer ROM. I haven't upgraded from 2.37 'cuz of the loss of IrDA dial-up too. I don't suppose the tkc ROM fixes the IrDA dial-up to my T68 cell phone?

I can't speak specifically for the tkc rom and serial sync, but I know it's based on the 3.10 rom, and I did have my 5500 syncing via serial on my win2k box. Even though win2k supports usb, I found the serial sync to be much more reliable. So I would assume that the tkc rom does indeed support it.
The benefits of the newer roms are great (speed, looks, etc.)

Ahh, that's the answer I was hoping for.
Then that moves me to the next question, if it syncs fine with Outlook, I don't have to worry about migrating all my PIM info from the old (2.37) format to the new 3.10 format? I can just let it be wiped it out when I flash the new ROM and then synchronize?
offroadgeek
Jul 31 2003, 12:06 PM
Yup! That's what I do. I wipe out my rom often (just screwing around), and since I keep all my pim data in Outlook, and because I have zero issues with syncing (wifi syncing is grrreat!). I never worry about losing data. I also keep my documents/ebooks, bookmarks backed up on my SD card....

I moved to the tkcROM yesterday, after first installing Outlook and syncing to it to ensure my data was properly backed up. Kudos to offroadgeek --- I read his posts to be sure I had a good sync, first. I've got a lot of history in my calendar and a large address book, and did not care to reenter all the data. I have noticed, however, that the "displayed" dates for appointments are correct in Ourlook, but are now showing up two hours off in the Sharp calendar. Any suggestions? :?

Sep 2 2003, 10:23 AM
If I remember correctly, I believe the tkcrom has only the 32/32 memory split... same as the original Sharp 3.10 rom. Proto though has said that he is working on offering other memory configs sometime...

Just flashed this rom yesterday. Eventually persuaded it to sync and Samba started to work. I had to remove the Windows software and reinstall though. Did a sync, backup and installed various apps.
This was with USB IO standard. ( I had been using Sharp 3.10 so had the proper software.)
Like an earlier poster I got a frozen Z when I ued PCLINK to change to ADVANCED USB TCP/IP. Also, like him, the settings didn't appear to alter. After a few attempts I gave in and tried synching and backing up again. It worked with my PC set to ADVANCED. When I looked at PCLINK settings it now, after several freezes and soft resets, said it was set to ADVANCED!
Is this a bug, have I missed something? I will not be altering PCLINK settings now but when I look at them I quit by hitting the X instead of OK.
One last thing, somewhere I saw a comment that it didn't recognise 8) OPIE apps, it certainly installs and runs some of them
cheers 8)

so far this has been the most usable rom for me...even though i prefer what is happening with OZ.
My only complaint so far is when i installed opie-calendar, there were no icons for it and the icons for the different views (week,day,month,year,etc...) got all screwed up.
anyone know a fix for this? also...where do you find the 'desktop' icons and how do you link them to the applications?
TIA

Seems the Kompany rom locates my card and I can configure it but then it possibly shuts it down. When I pull it out it see it being ejected. It doesn't even try locating my access point.
I have a Zaurus 5000d ..
Anyone else have an issue with there WiFi card? Or a possible fix.

I use version 1 of the Kompany Rom and I really like it. Bluetooth setup was quick and easy, no software needed, just a bit in the bash and some text editing, many thanks to whoever put the Bluetooth FAQ on this site.
I have purchased the Kompany Calendar, Mail, ToDo and Address Book, I can sync to the Z5500 using the latest Sharp V3 syncing software but all that happens is the text files show up in the docs tab and all the apps are empty. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatfully recieved.

Which company rom did you install?
Did you format the userspace after installation?
Have you done a restore from an older rom after installation?

The Kompany rom: I used initrd.bin-tkrom-2.2.1-slc8x0 and updater.sh-slc860 and standard Sharp zImage for C860.
Yes, I formatted userspace after installation.
I did not restore anything.
Everything works Ok in other applications.

Try 2.5.1, the one you used is very old.
See this thread, all the apps are now in a feed coded into the install program.

Sorry, I've never used it.
I use rsync to my linux box. It only backs up changed files so works really quickly.
I do seem to remember this being posted as a bug, so I presume it will be fixed in a later release.

Has anyone here tried tkcROM 2.0beta3? It seems to have some useful improvements but I can't connect with my D-Link 660W wifi card to the host PC. I am using the same settings as in tkcROM 1.0. The message I get after trying to connect is that I should check my WAP and/or TCP settings (which are OK). Is it only my card, is there a fix, or is this a known bug?

Yes, I have tried the ROM and it seems nice. My only problem so far has been in receiving files over infra-red: I have been trying to beam files from my Palm V, and after I have enabled IRDA (on both machines) the Palm recognises that the Z is there and the Z recognises the Palm, but the files won't transfer. The process worked OK on the previous version of tkcROM. Don't know how to get round this yet.

I have trcRom and I cannot change PATH via script file.
Changing environment variables only affects the current shell, and if you export the variable any subsequent child processes.
Changing the PATH variable from the command line is changing your curent shell, so will work fine.
If you have a script (say myscript) that sets the PATH to x, then exits. it will run the script in a new shell, change the PATH in the new shell only as it cannot change the parent shells environment, when it exits your PATH goes back to the calling shells value.
If you run the script with
CODE
. ./myscript
then the dot forces the script to be run in your current shell rather than a new one, and the PATH variable will be set as according to "myscript".
Alternativly set the PATH and export it in a script that runs before your shell fires up. ie in ~/.profile.
note: This is not zaurus specific, and applies to all unix operating systems.
Peter.
