niv
Hi all,

Some questions I would like to share:

1. should I flesh to open zaurus 3.5.3?
A: I was hoping to use the sandisk connect plus - that has 128MB as well as wifi. sharp ROM didn't support it.

2. what zImage should I use?
A: seems most folks opt to use a SD/MMC as storage for their application , thus using the 64-0 image. I used the 48-16 before getting an mmc.

3. anything to do after flashing to 3.5.3?
A: there is a bug that will freeze your zaurus. better go to the package manager and remove the libapm. then install the one from 3.5.2

4. How to connect to the internet using the cradle?
A: finnaly got it working :-)
ZAURUS side: network / usbd0 :
X automaticlly bring it up
_ DHCP

IP address: 192.168.129.201
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.129.200

First DNS: <your internet provider DNS>
second DNS: <your internet provider DNS>

Linux side: linky
windows side: This

5. snadisk connect plus howto:
Andres

6. Just got a MMC card. Its already formated to FAT. should I format it (mkfs) it to ext2?
A (malcolmxavier): FAT works just fine if all you want to do is put some documents, music or videos on it. If you want to use it as a fielsystem then making it ext2 will be better. The main thing that ext2 gives you over FAT is the ability to use "protection" on the files by assigning read write execute (rwx) priviledges to user, group or world. (Yes I know it gives other benefits, but that's the jist of it). Leave it FAT if you want to transfer files between your PC (windows or MAC) and your Zaurus, unless you have specific software the Windoze based system can not read ext2 file systems.

(ironstorm) The other most important benefit ext2 provides is the ability to create symbolic links, which is essential if you want to install packages onto it...

7. Is It Bad To switch The Rear Battery Cover, to reset th zaurus?
QUOTE
A: (technojunkie)  Resetting doesn't hurt anything except for killing anything running(hope you saved).

On a hard reset the ROM is copied from flash again anyway(for the stock sharp ROM), so no worries about corruption, although you do lose customizations. (That's what backups are for)

And no Taking the Z out of the cradle won't hurt anything either(unless you're using mass storage, in which case you should always unmount it.)

8. My root is full. even after deleting files, it still seems full. what to do?
A: (Mickeyl) To regain memory you need to shutdown all processes that have locks on the open files, i.e. restart opie and/or reboot. There's nothing you can do about that.

B. I have very good experiences with moving /opt to MMC. That frees a lot of space on rootfs and you don't have to worry with ugly symlinks etc. Example: Just cp -a /opt /mnt/card/ and then rm -rf /opt and ln -s /mnt/card/opt /opt. Best do that from console with Opie shut down.

Alternative: Use pivot_root or rboot script - there's a lot of information in the forum how to use MMC as rootfs. Good luck!

9. My Uni requires me to logon to checkpoint firwall to gain internet access:
A: This helps to setup perl. a perl script will aoutoconnect you to the net. <post script here>
I may still use a python script, as it is included. here is a small note

10. How to add bluetooth to my zaurus?
A: One can buy a CF bluetooth, or see this

Installing software

11. Just flashed to Open Zaurus. Where are all the programs for the zaurus?
A: you need to use the package manager to install them. to use it best get a network connection. otherwise, use this technic:
- look up the prgram here
- find out what dependencies it need
- dowload the dependencies from IKPG
- put them all on your CF/SD/MMC
- install them from the card

you may also wish to download all programs offered with 3.5.3:
- google for wget and install it.
run this:
CODE
$ wget -r --no-parent -l2 -A.ipk -w 5 http://www.openzaurus.org/officia
l/unstable/3.5.3/feed/opie/

more installing software

12. what does the blue circules next to some programs mean?
A: click the ? icon and you will see

13. I chose to upgrade ipkg (the program manager) and ended up unable to run it
A: Answer

14. Wait A Min: Opie Means No X?

A: QUOTE(lpotter @ Jun 26 2005, 03:43 PM)
You can do X with opie, you just need to install Xqt and X runs in a Qtopia app.
Although, I dont think the OZ distribution is compatible with the binary Xqt stuff...

Thanks ppl for help a sad sub how want to read th formula sheet of my new PDA.

First start off by downloading and installing qtopia Desktop 1.7 from trolltech

http://www.trolltech.com/download/qtopia/

It will work with OZ and Opie. Once you get it installed (It should install the USB stuff) you will be on the right track.

I have not found an easy way to surf the net thru the USB device, so everytime I want to get to the net with my Zaurus I use my Wireless card (this included updating packages).

I noticed a 5.3.2 in some of your path information; shouldn't that be 3.5.3 !! (notice the ending 3)
niv
malcolmxavier: thanks mate sure would do that , and update the first post.
zmiq2: thnks for that, sure would fix it. I started up with 3.5.3. got the suspend bug. flashed 2 and realized that sandisk connect + driver is missing. I gone back to 3 now.
any idea how I may use the wifi card? my Uni. has wifi, and IP are via dhcp.
Would try clicking start to see what heppend.

I dowloaded qtopia and got this error: Error -1607: Unable to Install InstallShield Scripting Run Time
here is the fix

update: seems that the qopia doesn't install new USB drivers at windows. so I am still stock at getting a ping from the zaurus to the PC.

help?

hi niv,

wifi is kind of easy: insert your cf card, and see if it is automatically recognized. Then, go to network settings and make proper adjustments there.

If the network you are connecting uses wep, then I think you have to manually (using the console) have to make proper adjustments in /etc/pcmcia/ files to have wep configured, cause the gui is not working OK.

Apart from that, wifi works as expected for me.

how to unmount the USB connection? so I may release it before taking it out of the crable.

Ah yes, sorry, forgot to mention that one. Good point!

what is better SD or MMC? which is faster?
Mickeyl
It doesn't matter. SD/MMC is attached via a 1-bit interface on the Zaurus. In theory SD could use 4-bit mode, but not on the Zaurus. That saved Sharp ~1 YEN wink.gif

very usefull guide is posted here
niv
I currently have Unknown IRDA1 up (y?) irda0 is down (y?)
niv
since posting the first msg I understood - I had to add a SD to be able to unlease the power the zaurus has.

my current setup proc. is:
1. flash the device with 0-64
2. take out all cards and reset
3. clibrate the screen at Opie . powerdown
4. put in a CF with Hentegs cardFS and an empty SD
5. reset and let cardFS do its thing
6. quit opie
7. Install IRK (so I may use the IR keyborad) to SD
8. Install my sandisk connect plus to SD
9. install oz-compat
10. install Kphone/Pi
11. install Opera
12. ipkg-link mount /mnt/card

I am considering moving to a "root on SD" as described at the guide in OZ.
I will test it later.
