I also had this problem, I tried a SanDisk and a Lexar in pdaXrom, and they did not work. They worked in the stock rom though.
Anyways, I won't be able to provide any inteligent responses to trobleshoot though, as I am going to be away for a month.

The fix is discussed in post #13. While an earlier post mentioned there indicated that this was needed with a patched kernel, it worked for me directly in RC10. This would seem to be a bug, but its not clear to me how extensive or why some of us see it and apparently many do not.
