I recently purchased a new zaurus 3100. Nice device, indeed, but the loudspeaker (and headphones) crackles and splutters sometimes when I play mp3 files. What, in general, is the sound quality of the zaurii?

I haven't noticed that problem myself. Does it only happen with some files?

or does it happen with the orientation of the screen? In other words flip the screen to see if it sounds better/worse.

Thank you very much for your answers. I got a tip which was helpful: to set the buffer size in the /Preferences/Etc of the Music Player to 1 MB.

Problem: I just copied a bunch of MP3s to my C1000's SD card. They're encoded at 128 kbps. They sound find played in iTunes on a desktop PC (through the same headphones I'm using with the Zaurus).

But played in the standard Music Player app on my Zaurus, they sound like and old stretched out audio tape!!! All wobbly and weird. The sound quality is crap.

I checked the buffer size mentioned above, and it was set to 2 MB. Just to test, I changed it to 1 MB as mentioned above, though I couldn't imagine that would improve anything. It didn't.

It looks like there's plenty of free memory, and I quit all other apps anyway, just in case.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem?

you may need to reincode your mp3 files. Various players even on other systems do the same. Is your 128 VBR or CBR?

Actually, I wasn't aware of the distinction between VBR and CBR... I ripped the MP3s using iTunes on the PC. But I just read that iTunes supposedly has an inferior MP3 encoder...

In any case, there doesn't seem to be any way to choose between VBR and CBR in iTunes. Does one or the other method work better on the Z?

I haven't tried it yet, still using mediaplayer1 until I get my networking issue straightened out (seems it won't connect out of my network until it 'warms up'...) weird... (oh yeah! I can tcpdump now! .. wanders off to try

Inferior to what? But in any case I don't think that could be the cause of your problem.



You can choose between them by going to Preferences/Importing/ and then selecting "Custom" from the "Setting" dropdown menu. But iTunes shouldn't be using VBR unless you specifically told it to.

Well, inferior to something called LAME, apparently. So I guess some people think iTunes is worse than lame??

Anyway, when I got home I tested the music player again, and it looks like it was a case of flaky headphones... the sound quality was great with the Z plugged into my sound system. In any case, thanks for taking time to reply!

I am using C3000 with headphone and using build in Musicplayer.

I meet your case before.
A mp3 file looks same as the other mp3 file.
But it plays in crackles and splutters .
After i remaked mp3->wav->mp3,that mp3 can works on Z.


And I found that if the volume level is [RED],then i obivously hear some background noise .
So i think the best volume level should be within the Yellow region.
