Full Version: Pdaxrom-builder Rules Update Idea

I've been playing with the pdaxrom-builder this few days..
The pdaxrom-builder works pretty well...
I've notice that some of the make file in the rules-ipkg are not up to date...
eg.. gtk+ now is already 2.8.6 but in the rules-ipkg, its still using 2.6.

The rules-ipkg make files will grow in the future and we should look into automatic update system. Probably something like gentoo.. would be great...

We should contribute to pdaxrom builder.. so that everyone can have its own customize pdaxrom.. just like my desktop running gentoo... emerge sync.. emerge world...
That will be awesome..

Idea, anyone...

Sounds great, but that's only an idea. Basically you have to make a new ebuild for new versions in gentoo too, so this builder system is not bad on this part.

If you think that a package should be a better version, then edit its rules and see if the package builds with it. In some cases it does not work. So you have to edit it more. In some cases it works, but it makes other parts of the system not work/not compile.

I guess that's why Sashz doesn't update everything in a release (and why Debian has so damn old packages when it's finally released). But if you edit a rule and it seems to be cleanly built, send the patch/edited files to Sashz, I'm sure that he will look into it if it's stable enough to build the system with it.

Or, of course, rom makers/builders could stop reinventing the wheel and use bitbake/openembedded to build their roms... wink.gif
(and in relation to post #1: bitbake is so much better than gentoo portage).

I am not sure that oe predates PTXdist (on which pdaxrom builder is based) or gentoo portage.

If the oe developers had not choose to reinvent the wheel, oe woudn't be there.

pdaXrom-builder based on PTXDist, which much better and easy for use than OE/BitBake. Basically pdaXrom-builder need for work only bash, make and host toolchain. pdaXrom-builder uses target pdaX OS as host system which already adapted for it, so we needn't configure host OS for build system. We never will migrate to another build system. So , please stop flame about OE/BitBake here.

sashz,

I am sorry, my comment was unclear. I honestly didn't mean it as a flame, or anything like that
(I don't have any connection with the OE team anyway).

I wanted to say that IMHO BB/OE makes it easier to add "rules" for new or updated packages
(maybe it is not BB/OE but the whole organization of their team that makes contribution/evolution easy, but anyway this is the feeling I get).
The PdaXrom builder is great and easy to use (as is the ROM) but seems more suited for "stable" builds, that do not change much.

Thanks to all the developer teams for their outstanding work.
