Okay, one of my sl-5500's is broken and I'm considering getting a c1000, but I mostly use my sl-5500 for ebook reading and with the joy button on the c1000 only available when you open it, how do you go through pages in an ebook?

Also, is the outside case of the c1000 black or it it grey? On some web sites it shows grey and on others black...thinking of buying it from Chase & Company.

Will most of the apps from my old zaurus install and work on the c1000?

I have a C860 that doesn't even have a joywheel. But it has a little scroll wheel on the outside, which is where you thumb will be when you hold the Zaurus on your left hand in portrait mode. In Justreader, this scroll wheel allows you to change pages forward and back. Very handy for ebooks. Don't know about any of the other programs you mention but if they work on the 5500 they should work on other Zaurus.

I have actually never seen a C1000 "live" but judging from pictures on the web (see, e.g.

from the conics web site), I'd say yes. It should be the thing below the OK-Cancel buttons.

Aha! Thank you, Felipe! That DOES, indeed, look like a wheel. :-) I'm a little closer to actually ordering a C1000.

Yup, that's a wheel. Under OZ the wheel maps to up and down arrow presses. So really, the app doesn't even need to "support" the wheel it "just works ™" I'm pretty sure it maps as up and down arrow presses under the sharp rom as well, but if it doesn't I'm sure there is software to remap it.

I have C3100, which for your purposes is the same as C1000. Opie Reader and other readers map the wheel as up and down so you can scroll through pages in the portrait mode. It is really comfortable.

Regarding the colors. C3000 is white. C1000 is gray. C3100 is black and dark gray for the screen cover. See the difference here: http://conics.net/shp/pda/zaurus-sl-c700/sl-c1000/.

Most of the apps from the old zaurii install and work on the cx000 but you may need to uncheck the magnified mode (press and hold stylus on the icon to do it). Some apps were designed for lower resolution and they may appear garbled (really small icons, out of alignment layout, smaller window, etc.). Many of the programs (like zbedic, ZUC have a VGA version that you should use with Cx000).

I think the entire 1000 outer shell is black (silver trim centerline). The inside where fascia where the screen is located is grey.

The 3100 has a black body, but the entire screen casing is grey.

The thing that confused me about the color is that one web site I was going to order from had a list of specifications and one of the specs said the color of the unit is grey!
The c3000 has an outside color of grey, and the c1000 and the c3100 have an outside color of black, I think.

One more question...why is it that in all the pictures I see online, for instance here: C1000
that the displayed picture only takes up part of the screen? It looks like the same sized picture I have on my SL-5500. Why isn't the entire screen used for the picture? Looks like I'm not gaining anything.

I can't order it until after Thanksgiving since we are going to have a family Thanksgiving at my son's place in Chapel Hill, NC and I wouldn't be here to receive it but I'm excited already. :-)

The clamshell screen size is roughly the same size as a 5500, but the resolution has been bumped considerably. Everybody *is* wondering why the slightly bigger, but much better 6000 screen hasn't made it to the clamshells yet.

- The Cxx00 screens are 3.7" diagonal, which is something like .2" larger than an SL5500, but that much isn't seriously noticable unless you have both units right side by side. The big difference, as bluedevils mentioned, is the resolution: it's 640x480 on the Cxx00 and only 320x200 on the SL5500, so it has four times as many pixels. That resolution is immediately obvious.
- One drawback is the resolution is so high that SL5500 apps have super tiny widgets and text, often times, when "Display Magnified" is unchecked. Most work just fine in a 320x200 window on the screen, but man. Talk about squinting! (snicker) Kpacman has such itty bitty ghosts it's almost comical.

- I'd take any Cxx00 over any SL, even the 6000, because I'm a real fan of clamshells. If you like the SL form factor, there are a number of used 6000 series for sale here on the forum ... you may want one of them instead. (shrug) Not trying to dissuade you, I'm just pointing out alternatives. (grin)

- Me, I think Sharp has several warehouses full of these 3.7" screens from the long production runs of the Cxx0 series, and they're proven technology in the rotating-screen environment. I'd just love to have that extra .3", but I don't. It's also possible the side-on view of the SL6000 screen isn't that hot ... Hiro's screen actually looks better in portrait than in landscape, and this effect may be unnaccebtably pronounced with the larger screen. Any SL6000 owners out there can check that? (wink)

The black bars on the side of the screen are not the screen itself. It's just plastic casing. So the picture takes the whole screen but the screen is much smaller than the casing.

The trim around the C1K screen is dark grey. The outside of the unit is black with a silver trim ring, as someone else mentioned. The screen does not take up the whole of the inside of the top cover.

I had a 6K that I traded here to get my C1K. I wouldn't go back, but that's just because this form factor fits my needs more than the loss of the marginally bigger/better screen and the builtin wifi on the 6K can overcome. Great little pocket powerhouse!!!

Oh, and the wheel under the OK and Cancel buttons is indeed a jog wheel. Works as arrow down and up in the word processor and Page Up and Down in Opera. I don't have a book reader and I'm running the Sharp ROM, if that helps.
