Well I had a weekend free and.....

Decided to install Mandriva 10.2 on my PC and see if I could get kinoDV up and
running.

Suprised myself after two tries and a reinstall of the OS I got it working :0) (and it works well) However I now find I need a video editor app, somthing which will allow me to change the colour balance and if posable also do chroma key edits. (I have a lot of blue screen DV stock)

I tried several times to install cinalerra v1 and v2 but after lots and lots of tries now have an install of v2 that will do everything except save the new video (render) The clip does save, but becomes massive 300MB for a 30sec mpeg1??? and the video is distorted with no sound and colour all over the place.

If I export to jpegs (one jpeg per frame) then the jpegs are fine so anyone have any idea what the problem is???

off the top of my head ( I haven't touched this in a while) it probably has to do with filetypes in cinelerra. I'll think about it more, but in the meantime, have a look at what versions of quicktime you have installed, and look back over the docs on cinelerra. I seem to recall it being pretty *()_*##!! finicky about export filetypes. mpeg1 is probably not a good choice for export. Use something quicktime. It prefers uncompressed quicktime (in a fairly archaic wrapper), though I think some compressing can be done with luck and patience. Similar w/ audio. I don't remember which it prefers, but I'd guess something different from what you've been using.

Uncompressed stuff is indeed gigantic. since clips should be fairly short, you might consider, if limited in hd space, exporting small clips one at a time, and reassembling them, compressed, in kino or avidemux.

I'm sure there is more to it, but hopefully this will get things headed in the right direction.

Aha the penny drops I dont think I have QT installed. Although I went through the usual trawl to get all the dependencies sorted I dont think QT was on the list. Im not too stuck for disk space (yet) but the clips Im working on are fairly short in any case.
Another thought Iv had which may make my job a bit quicker is if there is a loss less mpeg splitter which can pull out a number of seconds of video from a longer file but without recompressing the data, it would mean I wont need to go back the the original DV clips in the first place as I have copies of the DV tapes in mpeg for refrence (but obiously these look naf when recompressed after edititng).

I think you can trim in avidemux2


And (though it is also a bit finicky about formats) kino2 has some timeline editing, I think.

Il have a look. Cant do the split in Kino as the DV source dosent have the after effects on it that I need. So my options are iether to redo the video from scratch or split the old mpeg files I have into smaller files but retain the header and not recompres (which gets lotts of artifacts and hairs) There was a utility for MS to do this but Iv forgotten its name.

The utility..is maybe Vdub?

It supposedly works in wine. Might try that if necessary

Kool.. Still have broblems with cinalerra output but avidemux2 is great.

Plan B for the chroma key work for now is to use wine and my old pal Video Wave

Can someone tell me how to configure Videoclips for the Zaurus 5500 in avidemux? For playing them on opie-mediaplayer2?

You would probably need to set some custom filters.

Start by using the VCD auto wizzard then change the resize filter to 320x240 audio can be changed to 22khz mono. if this dont work (ie dropped frames on playback) try 240x160.

Also if you are running OP2 on a 5500 using a SHARP ROM setup a 8MB swap file in usr storage (not SD or CF) this will give OP2 the extra RAM for plaging large mpeg movies without crashing.

I found using the overclocking mod worked well and use SD to store the video not CF it should be a little quicker (im not sure if the Cacko 5500 kernal patch workes with hentages ROM but that makes writing to SD very fast)

BTW cinelerra is a very good tool for video once yuo get it working and then get your head around it.

I'm now able to Cut, deinterlace, recolour, chroma key and filter blue edges out in one go with multiple filters.... Rendering is not slow either (OK just got a new P4 3GHz which helps.......)
