Hello,

4 weeks ago I bought an Archos AV500. So far I am content with the equipment. But sometimes the equipment shows some little strangely errors. Where I don’t know, is this a bug? One reads the strangest phenomena, in the most diverse forum.
As told, the Arcos is now 4 weeks old. And some days ago following happened. After relighting the display shows one half in normal colours, and the other half shows wrong colours. After that, I tested the equipment extensively. But nothing else mattered.

Is it a software bug? Or is it defect?

I therefore would like to ask you for your opinion about the Archos AV 500 (or
similarly Archos devices.) Do they run error free with you? Please write down your impressions in this threat.

The Half-screen thingi happened to me too. I think most of the weird stuffs happens when the device is being used while charging.

The Half-screen happened when i fast forward during movie playback using the corner button with the supply on.

The occasional flickers occurs with movies/thumbnails that have scenes that are bright like Subtitles, Sunlight, Sky....etc.

The Host USB needs some attention too. Not so sure it should be used to read/write portable Harddisk as there's no proper "Safely Remove Hardware" procedure. My Portable Harddisk had to be formatted (twice) even though Archos manages to work with it, after disconnection the Harddisk cannot be read by my PC.

Yes of course, I think the most things happen, while the power supply is plugged. I hope it is an bug. Than I wait for an update, that will fix the problems.

Yeah I've experienced the same problems.. Achstld me hey were trying to fix the half-screen problem.. We'll just have to wait for a new firmware

As for the hard disk format, they had no answer.. It seems to happen from time to time, so make sure you have a backup of your files somewhere

I've had my Archos 500 for about 3 weeks, and it works great.

Hi,

I would say that your experience is typical. I am now on my fourth unit (I have to keep getting them replaced under warranty). This isn't so bad as within the EU you now have 2 years warranty on all items such as this as part of your statutory rights. I actually bought an AV440 and when it broke they no longer had them available so got an AV560 as replacement! The downside is that one of the uses I have it for is copying my photos across from my camera when I am out and about, but as the hard drive can lock up without warning this is not satisfactory. Don't get me wrong, ALL hard drives are prone to this, but the Archos seems especially flaky.

I was interested to read the post about most problems occurring whilst the player is being used whilst charging - I would concur with this. My wife's unit has been far more reliable than mine and she uses hers mostly on the train, whilst mine is usually plugged into my stereo (and hence left on charge a lot).


Despite treating my Archos extremely delicately I have had the following problems:
I have had the problem with the right half of the screen turning negative.
I also had a weird horizontal bar wipe effect happen today where the screen turned white and the unit needed to be repowered.
Also I find that when I select an album folder to play it often starts to play the first track but no sound comes out (the track is in fact not really playing despite the play icon showing) - if I skip to the next track it starts playing OK, and I can then skip back again. I've just upgraded to the latest firmware, so hopefully it will become a little more stable.
On my last unit, it also developed the problem where it would boot up only to shut off instantly (on battery power) or frieze on the boot screen if on mains power. Removing the battery doesn't help. From what I can gather this is a hard drive issue, and I have read elsewhere that it may be resolvable by removing then reseating the drive. THIS WOULD LIKELY INVALIDATE THE WARRANTY though, so I've never bothered to try it. Back to the shop it went!

Although Archos does seem to put out a reasonable number of firmware updates their tech support is a joke, I just go back to the retailer these days.

Finally, would it really have killed Archos to put a hard reset switch on these things???

When my current one dies I think I will ask the shop if I can use it to go part way towards a new laptop...

For what it's worth, I've found that using another good quality power supply with the archos means it operates fine whilst charging. I think, therefore, archos are just supplying 'dodgy' power supplies.

I too am on my third av 560, since last Christmas but here in the UK I just take it back to Currys and they exchange it with no problem. I experience the 2 colour split screen usually after recording from TV, but works ok after turning the unit off, and then on again. I have only rung the Archos helpline once, never again! I spoke to some French guy who was worse than useless. I must say though that when it is working, the Archos is very good, I am a truck driver, and use mine most days. Nothing better when waiting to unload than watching a movie or some TV, and getting paid for it!

This is all very alarming! I have two AV 500 30 gigs and so far I've found them to be amazingly good. I'm very pleased that I chose the 30 gig versions because I find I don't need a larger drive, I can load everything I need to to them and they are noticeably thinner than the larger drive versions.

I do find that the colour balance on one of them is 'cold' and while I've purchased a 'NewMp3Technology' preamp for an external microphone, its output level is very low indeed. This is a pity because I have some seriously good (broadcast) microphones and using them to record to the Archos would be more than useful. Can I get an answer to this problem? No apparently I can't.

The Archos and 'NewMp3Technology' help desks and after sales service are not just a disgrace, they are non existent. I have never had a reply to a question. What a pity because 'NewMp3Technology' have fine products and are quick enough to sell you something but it makes recommending their products impossible.
