runs on LInux....but at the moment not on Zaurus....

I think I'd rather buy a tomtom than put win on a z

Drop the idea of TOMTOM on Zaurus, it will bring absolutely no good.

TomTom licensing explicitely forbids the use of their proprietary software on devices that it isn't intended for.

Check out TomTom Go license, also the PocketPC/Palm software makes similar references but limits it to supported devices. There is also a clause about not transferring the data files to other devices (excluding backup).

I can't be bothered digging out the box for my TomTom Go and finding the clause but I can assure you that it is there.

And you're supposed to pay for Windows XP as well.
gab74
ok...but what about opentom....running on Zaurus ???
Da_Blitz
I have seen some projects on the net that combind GPS + GPRS + google maps, you just dont get the path navigation but it is still cool

i saw someone with windows 98 in these forums running on a zaurus. It is verified you can do it but i misplaced the link. (most likely not that all usefull)

Win 98 running on Zaurus.....anyone can give me infos, i try to search in the forum but i didnt find anything, i leave in italy and there are no detailed maps for italy.....this is why i need some apps like tomtom....
ThC
I guess it will be useless for what you're trying to do ... it was running over a x86 emulator (bochs) and was too slow to be really useable (imagine running w98 on a old 386 wink.gif .. beside I don't know if it would be able to handle any device connected to the zaurus such as a gps receiver)
gab74
ok..thanks so the only thing remains opentom running on zaurus....

Two comments:

1) Did you agree to those clauses when you bought the device? I find it hard to believe that any company can put restrictions on you _after_ you purchase since the deal is done _at_ purchase.

2) What if Kellogs decide to put a clause on the inside of their "Special K" packets saying "This food stuff may not be stored in a different container, or consumed by someone not related to the purchaser, or by anybody on a Tuesday." You really gonna obey that?

These companies are really taking the piss - and we're generally suckers for it.

NB: I do _not_ condone illegal copying of software - but trying to declare that you cannot _move_ a piece of software to a different device is dishonest.

pfft...anyone wanna try and tweak tomtom to run on the z? anyone got the files?

Yes i'm in your line....

Infact if i buy a Tomtom GO 300 that is a linux device and move the software under another hardware in this case the Zaurus, i do not think this is illegal.

I hope tomtom or opentom......wil work on Zaurus

I don't think it's the software that they are particularly bothered about... they obviously sublicence mapdata to put on the device under a specific agreement about devices it is to be used upon.

However, if you want to see more of this licensing then read Apple's license for their Operating Systems, states that you aren't allowed to install it on non-apple hardware (or used to).

Typically these licenses give the user the option to repackage the device and send it back... hmmm... maybe I should send my old TomTom Go back since I bought it just before they brought out the version with the GPRS traffic updates... well I don't like the license!

Hmm. I seem to remember seeing that too (though I think it may have been Win95 now that I think about it). Why are you so sure?

i do not understand why WINDOWS 98 runs and WINDOWS MOBILE 5.0 no...

I see AXIM X51V have almost the same hardware of the C31000....

I would try to put windows mobile 5.0 but i do not have any point to start.....

Simple. Drivers. Welll. . not exactly drivers, but kernel supports. Or something. . Like porting roms to one zaurus, but them not working on an iPaq or a different Zaurus? Same thing. It's like the AmigaOne and the AppleMac. Same processors, same PCI cards, you could put it in the same case, use matching memory etc etc etc, but you wouldn't be able to run MacOS on your Amiga (Not that you'd want to) Because the hardware is slightly different. Savvy? XD

I am SUCH an insufferable know it all.
Let's just hope I'm still right.
Da_Blitz
you can do it but the amount of time and money (remeber how mirosoft expects to be paid, there dev stuff being the most expensive products they sell) is prohibitve, i recomond you just go and buy a PDA with GPS as the maps will cost you as much as the pda if they are boaght seperatly

I think main problem is Zaurus Bootloader. Even if you can create WinCE 5.0/WinMobile 5.0 (for WinCE - there is Microsoft Windows CE Platform Builder, which has 30 day trial version) Image with all drivers - you can't do anything with it...

Sorry for my English...
But, why can't I create bootloader? I suppose MS Software allow?
I can't download Trial Builder... because more it weights more than 1Gb...

Okay just to let you know. I just got an Axim X51v. It's going back to dell as soon as it can. Windows mobile 5 sucks dead donkey b@lls. It's buggy as hell and the bluetooth is crippled on the 51v. Searching e-bay now for a 3100. smile.gif
Da_Blitz
the axims can run linux, but i prefer a keyboard, i started the axim x30 but went and got a c3k, and thinking back the cxk sereies are a better match for linux (but i stay on the command line all day, if you use opie or somthing then you wouldnt notice it)
Ferret-Simpson
I use a 5600, not as good as the SL-C, but good enough! And besides, I'm getting an XDA-One for all my Windowsy needs. The rom available free on My-XDA.com will give me 2003 on it! That's Bluetooth etc via the SD slot, Or better, wifi. (I HATE BT!!!)

Easiest way? Get One of each!
Cheap WinPDA, and a Zaurus! Better, get an old cheap winPDA, and get it for pence!

I am just leaving the Windows Mobile 5 mess that Dell & MS partnered to create. I have an x51v that I'm going to sell and I have a Z on the way to save the day biggrin.gif.
Da_Blitz
I dont know the VGA out on the Dell is tempting, if it had usb host it would be a deal breaker for me
