Alrighty, I just installed the new 3.5.4 release this morning, set it all up, and was playing around in my new account. Suspend worked fine, everything else seemed ok, but I logged out once and now I can't log in again!

Ok, I can log in as root, but I don't really want to do that much.

When I try to log in as my user, it goes to the black loading screen with the X cursor, then returns me to the loging screen. I have confirmed that I'm using the correct password, as I logged in as root, changed it, and still won't log in. If I purposefully enter an incorrect password, it tells me so and doesn't let me log in.

I'm using the 32-0 rom and GPE

Sounds like something might be failing when you try to login as non-root.

Can you watch the output of logread to see whether the error is reported? Anyone have any other suggestions on how to see the error in question?

Here's the output from my logread, didn't really see anything to do with login, but:

I had the same problem. On a whim, I reflashed and tried creating a new user at log in... voila, it worked fine. Which doesn't get my old user up and running, but which reinforces the idea that something gets broken with that user's ability to run his window manager session after upgrade.

Obviously a bug, perhaps try chatting to the folks on #gpe and see if they can point you in the right direction to track down the error so you can submit a bug report.
