Have had an Archos Recorder 15gb for about 4 years now. It is working very well (recently Rockbox'ed it...significant improvement all around)...The only drawback is the transfer speed...very sluggish...I recently formatted a couple of external hard drives from FAT 32 to NTFS and the transfer speed on them increased significantly...My question- Is it worth it or beneficial or totally absurd to do the same with my Archos 15gb (FAT 32 - NTFS)...

I don't think Rockbox, nor the Archos rom, supports NTFS formatted drives. So, you would end up making the device useless.
