I just pop up an idea.

Since the OS of linksys Routers and Gateways are Linux based, would it be possible to be hacked and turned into a Linux workstation or servers in addition to its current limited applications.

Which many others have already had

They can make great fileservers and are good for other low intensity tasks. The lack of RAM and the low CPU speed used in most of these devices make it wholly unsuitable for "workstation" use - even the lowly 5x00 have better specs.

Yep--comin' at you live via an NSLU2 proxy/file/mail/web server here myself, over a connection served by a WRT54G running DD-Wrt. Hooray for hackables!

any openwrt or openslug can be used as a workstation provided you like the command line

there is such thing as a "slug term" that is a 4x20 line LCD and a keyboard. if you want a vt100 terminal that supports bold, underline and italic then you might want to get one of these: http://www.pjrc.com/store/mp3_display_beta.html fonts http://www.pjrc.com/tech/mp3/lcd_fonts.html

to get the bold and underline you need to modify a terminfo entry but it shouldnt be hard, then all you need is a serial keyboard or an adaptor

i have also seen the usb video card used on a slug and running X so it can be used as a thin terminal (great idea IMHO)

From my own experience the quote is inaccurate. I have and use both the older version of WRT54G and the WRT54GS version. The second version can/has been flashed with the ddt-wrt system. If you look at their site you will find up to date information on all Linksys routers which can/have been flashed and a load of other devices which can also be flashed.

Other versions of these open firmware systems are also capable of being flashed onto numerous devices. "Google is your Friend!"

Right but, the newer versions only have 2Mb of flash. You'll get dd-wrt on there, but not much else. I don't think there's even enough room left to make them into kismet-drones.

From my little experience, DON'T EVER BUY any WAG54G linksys Gateway series.

They don't have linux inside, and also they don't work well.

That model could be a big source of troubles, so be aware, and read the forums before you buy it.
