Hello boys,my name is piero and I am an Italian user Free and OpenBSD. For excuse myself for my little English ..

I have to to buy one Sharp Zaurus C3100 But the vendor in the notes tells me..

CODE
I've experimented with many different ROMs on this unit, so although it currently has a version of Cacko installed, I don't vouch for its sanity. I've also played around with the drive arrangement, setting up an ext3 partition and a large swap partition.

Basically, if you haven't already used a Zaurus, and/or you're not into Linux geekery, I don't recommend you buy this. I've had a lot of fun with this unit, and I want it to go to someone who knows what they're getting themselves into. It's definitely not a consumer-grade PDA. The buyer will almost certainly want to install their own ROM, and may need to muck around with the drive partitioning. Please don't bid if you have no idea how to do this or what it means!

Note that I have just tried to reflash the ROM, and failed. For some reason, it won't accept the SD card I've inserted with the new image files. I haven't tried to do this for a few months, so perhaps I'm just doing something wrong. But there's a possibility that something has broken, as unlikely as that seems. From what I've read, it's very hard to 'brick' the unit just from software. Unfortunately, I don't have time to investigate where the problem lies.

I would want to understand if the rom mother it is damaged or the rom OS Cacko ..

To me nn interests Cacko, I want OpenBSD 4.0,is damaged OS or ROM mother board ???

Sorry for my language and thanks to you all .... rolleyes.gif

Hi Segnale,

Basically, what the seller is trying to tell you is that

1) He changed the ROM (like the OS...) from the original Sharp ROM that came with the Zaurus to the one called 'Cacko' that was created by the great Maslovsky here on the forums.

The Cacko ROM is based upon the Sharp ROM, it's just better 'without all the fat and calories that you don't need'....you can read more about the Cacko ROM on his webpage:

http://cacko.biz/

With this ROM you can still use all the apps that come with the Zaurus.

There are several other ROM's available (including BSD...) created by others and you can find out more about them here on the forums...

2) I think that he tried to change the ROM back to the original Sharp ROM for selling purposes, but was unsuccessful and wants to dlsclose this to a buyer so that it avoids surprises and a buyer doesn't complain to him later in case they can't change the ROM either.

My guess is that he was unsuccessful in re-flashing the ROM due to the files on his SD card. This has happened to me before. Sometimes it works better if you use a CF card instead of the SD card. Also, sometimes, you have to try flashing several times before it works OK.

So it sounds like the seller is trying to be honest and let everyone know the situation, so that a buyer who is not familiar with Zauruses or with Linux is unhappy with the purchase. If you're comfortable with Linux that you should be OK, but no way for me to guarantee it since I have not seen this Zaurus.....

Hope this helps un piccolo....

I have to agree with Mark, a CF card (preferably empty) is a better choice to try to flash a Z. I too have had issues flashing from an SD. I now stick to 256MB SanDisks CFs for all my flashing needs. There are the simple cards not the fancy Ultra and Extreme cards.

Then ROM of OS it is damaged Cacko ....

It yourselves advise to buy me or no??

Sorry You excuse for the questions repeated, but I want to I understand..

As I said before, Segnale, it is probably OK to buy based upon what information I have.

There is really no way for anyone to know with 100% certainty that the Zaurus is OK without using it. But based upon my experience with several Zauruses it probably and I emphasize the word probably the OS can be re-flashed again.

I re-read the seller's description again it does not really say that the Cacko OS is damaged, just that the seller made some changes to it, that may or may not cause some problems, he does not say specifically.

So as the seller said and I agree, whoever buys it should be familiar and comfortable working in the Linux environment.

Hope this helps a bit,

Mark
