I recently cvs checked out and compiled e17. So far I can tell it's really fast and good looking.

That's the result so far:

(the background is a wallpaper only, it's pdaxrom b3 actually)

packages (required): http://z.drun.net/packages/e17/core/ - takes about 8mb space
development files (optional): http://z.drun.net/packages/e17/devel/
extra stuff (incomplete, mostly unfunctional): http://z.drun.net/packages/e17/extra/

my .xinitrc file: http://z.drun.net/packages/e17/.xinitrc.e17

libcurl is required: http://z.drun.net/packages/curl_7.16.2_armv5tel.ipk , maybe some other packages ( from http://z.drun.net/packages/ )

However, I'm having few troubles with it ...

1. I cannot add icons on the desktop - could not find how to do it.
2. In xterm I cannot type "0" - really weird, as I'm trying to load everything as in rox desktop.
3. How I can add applications to "All applications" ?

and few other things that aren't the way i want them ( for example - suspend - not working, hibernate - never tried it (i'm scared), shutdown - shut down the machine, pressed by accident, should be removed from the menu i guess)

Otherwise it's really FAST and pretty STABLE - didn't expirienced any major crashes except with the open file => "bookmark path" thing.

If anyone wants to try it - you're welcome. If you want to help me with the issues I had - anything is appreciated smile.gif

I tried e17 under OZ last year. You seem to have gotten a little farther than I did with it. I had major panel problems with it and theme changes weren't taking. But, I did have the same icon problem that you have. Here is what I have found out about those two issues. e17 uses a special format for its icon shortcuts compared to the .desktop files that we are used to. They created a special conversion program to convert .desktop files to this format but, was badly broken and so they were recommending that the users handroll the files but, the format for the special format required wasn't documented very well so, the process was more of an art than a science. I little while later, due to the above state of affairs the team discussed switching back to the more common .desktop format.

What about RAM usage?

About 7-8Mb here (by default), I saw ROX too - almost the same memory usage ( not counting X itself )

but it's definately faster than rox.

I installed e17 from the http://www.pdaxron.org/contrib/daal/ feed and had no problems at all. I just followed the instructions in the threads here and set it as the default wm for a new user, so I could test it out while still using icewm.

It's definately fast and very usable but I find configuring e a bit of a pain and the suspend routine seems broken.

The one from daal is quite old as last time I checked (and now the feed is down?). I have installed a later build from uman (http://uman.gefechtsdienst.de/files/feed/) which I think is from CVS of 2007/04/21. I found no big problem with this build and suspend/resume worked OK. (I use the power button to suspend/resume)

1. Can you really put icons in e17 desktop? I've looked around but haven't seen a single screenshot of e17 with icons on it! As a workaround I use rox pinboard on top of e17. (I know it consumes a bit of memory, but I constantly use swap file...)
2. There is no such problem in uman's build...
3. I think e17 has already incorporated .desktop files for the application menu, so no .eap files are needed as in daal's build. The application menu configuration file should be created as ~/.config/menus/applications.menu. E17 can pick up desktop files from the normal desktop file path, i.e., /usr/share/applications, and local files from ~/local/share/applications. You may create submenus by putting directory files at ~/local/share/desktop-directories. Icons are automatically loaded from /usr/share/pixmaps but it seems to read png files only. The format of menu, directory and desktop files can be found at freedesktop.org. (http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications_2fmenu_2dspec)

You may also create a menu file as ~/.e/e/applications/menu/favorite.menu, which will then be shown by e17 as the favorite menu. Or, alternatively, you can create the favorite menu by using e17's own Configuration panel->Menus->Favorite Menu. But you must configure the application menu first before anything will appear here.

As a side notes, you may also configure iBar by creating a file ~/.e/e/applications/bar/default/.order, which is simple listing of desktop files (one desktop file in one line)

Sounds like a lot of works but once you've set up the menu structure correctly, it's a simple task to add new apps to it! rolleyes.gif

i'm having same problem with e17 under angstrom biggrin.gif
did you find how to quickly create menu items ?
and by the way how did you have the taskbar to fill all the bottom of the screen ? and is it on top of all windows ?
(i'm a bit tired to googlesearch wink.gif
jpmatrix
thanks to meanie, i copied his .config/menus/applications.menu in my home directory and all installed applications now appears into the e17 menu!

so my last request on e17 would be to have the bottom menubar fill all the bottom and that new opened windows stayed on top of it...
kkazakov13

With icons and taskbar fill all the bottom. Just check in the configuration, there was some checkbox there ... can't tell , as I'm with Rox currently.
fiferboy
kkazakov, have you taken down the e17 packages? The directory you linked to in your first post doesn't seem to exist any more...

There seem to be 2 threads concerning e17 at the moment, this and http://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=24177

Do they amount to the same thing?
Will any of these options work on an c860, given that I have got pdaXii13 running on it?

Cheers

Well, I removed it , as it's too buggy. The above screenshot (with Jennifer Aniston) was with later version of E17. I'm having it in mind to build newer version. The previous I had did not supported icons on the desktop, and everything else was really buggy, as I checked out while they were really screwing everything at the moment.

perhaps you should get & compile the latest e17 cvs because on angstrom e17 seems really quick and stable. i don't know about icons on desktop however.
kkazakov13
yes, I will ... just need some time ... hell ... how i need time sad.gif
