Full Version: Tried To Make 40gb Z With Ipod Hdd

Hi All,

I tried yesterday to fit in a 40GB hard disk out of a 4G ipod into the C3000 Z.

The plan was to replace the internal CF disk with the ipod hdd - with about 2cm sticking out. To do this I had to make a new gap from the silver plastic above the CF entry point and extend the CF entry point on the white plastic.

After about 2 hours of opening, unscrewing, ripping bits of plastic, the new hdd fit in (with the bit sticking out on the side, hey I didn't care, was going to have a 40GB Z !).. it just wouldn't power on.... the ipod (toshiba) disk is 3.3v - same as the microdrive... to power it back up you need to run it off the battery for some reason, then plug in the adapter... otherwise if you try to power with the adapter, it light would keep blinking and nothing happens...

so i closed everything up again and put the original 4gb in there and it is back to normal except for the large gaps...

If anyone has some pointers im willing to try it?

maybe a 5G ipod disk which is a little thinner might work?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the iPod HD does not use the standard CF pinout, even though the form factor might be compatible.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the iPod HD does not use the standard CF pinout, even though the form factor might be compatible.

I thought it was only for the ipod minis which have the CF size drives, but their pins are different to standard... but the 4G ipod drive has the same pins as normal CF... don't know if the internal wiring is different or not... could be the reason it didnt power up?

I believe iPod drives are pure IDE devices they have no CF compatibility mode.

The CF interface is a lot more than just a pinout. The CF specs actually define three different types of devices that can connect: memory, I/O, and ATA. The Zaurus PCMCIA interface only supports the first two. Despite the fact that it contains a miniature hard disk, the CF microdrive in the 3XXX series Zaurii is accessed as a memory card. It can only be replaced by devices that support the CF memory card interface protocol. iPod hard drives only work only as ATA devices and thus won't work with the Zaurus. Even the 4GB drives in the iPod minis that were "real" CF microdrives had their memory card protocol support disabled so they could not be used in cameras and PDAs.

Is it possible to MOD the Microdrive to re-enable the memory card protocol support ?
I mean is it crippled in firmware, PCB or is some chip internally crippled ?

its crippled in firmware, hitachi and the other vendors got mad that people bought the ipods at a cheaper price than a comercial MD and ripped out the innards

the early mini's MD actually do work as a CF card, a problem that caused massive conffusion on ebay when the news went live, after the cards had been swapped over to thier crippled version.

there are 2 product numbers when ordering now, crippled and non crippled. as a side note the CE-ATA spec came out after this incident offering a smaller size and a diffrent way to connect the drives (flex cable) i am wondering if it was partially motivated by this incedent as there are already several ways to hook up a HD without inventing a new one (USB, SD, CFIO, SATA, ATA, Mapped SRAM)
