Debian Iceweasel doesn't seem to work under EABI, and it's a bit heavy for a Zaurus anyway. Minimo (installed from the Angstrom feed) works well for me, but the UI is a bit quirky, and things like URLs on the command line don't work. I've started work on fixing it:

Icehamster

Maybe this is of use to some of you. I'll build a proper .deb package as soon as I find the Minimo source...

Hi, I have repacked a minimo deb from Ångström official ipk.
You may download it at this OESF thread.

I also repacked a icehamster deb mixed from Ångström minimo ipk and the icehamster_0.1.deb.
Thus you can install icehamster only and do not have do something dirty like "--force-overwrite".
You may download it here. I will also put it in the thread I mentioned above. smile.gif
UPDATE: new version of icehamster no longer needs a "remixed" deb.

I am using it now, and like it a lot. I will try it as my default browser and see how it goes. It remembers things like my OESF forum password, which helps a bit. Forward and back buttons work, which is a pleasant change for a browser robust enough for my banking site.

I would prefer a local bookmarks page, and to set the default startup page, but I can hack that with a button pointing icehamster to a page containing the bookmarks I want.

Since this is now my main computer, an improvement in the browser situation is much appreciated.

Icehamster had released version 0.2.

It depends on minimo now, and no longer needs a "remixed" deb. smile.gif

That's the only change. I'll probably - if I may - link to your page for the nicely-packaged Minimo deb.

Minimo has some sort of built-in bookmarks system, but it doesn't work out-of-the-box and I can't find any documentation for it. If anyone knows XUL and Javascript, patches would be appreciated.

I may try to integrate one of the Firefox extensions for Google Bookmarks or del.icio.us or similar - if it's lightweight enough.

I can't download either minimo or the icehamster wraparound from that link. Both give error messages to the effect tgat some file can't be downloaded since it does not exit.

Downloading seems to be broken in Minimo (and therefore also in Icehamster). I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, you'll have to use a different browser... sad.gif

The minimo deb put in calno.com is hosted by ehostsource.

I can download it without problem. I have no clue if it was down when you try it.

As far as I know, ehostsource's service is quite stable.

Maybe you can put a mirror in some free webspace service?

To clarify: this is a problem with Minimo itself, not the debs or the hosting. Using Minimo (or Icehamster) to download anything produces an error message like "/tmp/xzcmnams.deb could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator."

I'll try to track it down and fix it in the next version.

Well, I tried using another web browser. Neither dillo nor websurf managed it. Dillo had trouble with this site, for some reason (the oesf site, which had worked before), and netsurf downloaded the minimo document, but then displayed it as a bunch of garbage in the window, but woult not let me save it.

Fixing the dowload problem in icehamster would be nice for me. I had to go to a machine in my temporary office to get it, so now I have to go wash my hands.

Wow great work.

This is now my primary browser. For the longest time I've been looking for some way besides wget to download etexts off of gutenberg straight to my zaurus and this works wonderfully. It even deftly handled many of the ad banners (whether thats a good thing or not is yet to be determined).

Thanks a ton

i'm discovering this thread and icehamster 0.5 !
it seems to handle well my facebook profile so that's a good point! wink.gif
thanks datathief !

I am still having trouble downloading files. Most such ware links from a page. I can't just save the whole page, can I? Yet, when I click on the file to be downloaded, I still get the same error. What is the workaround?

Can you give an example? I haven't managed to figure out Minimo's built-in download manager, but mine (select "File => Save Link As..." and then click a link to download) works for me.

Well, I just tried to download either icehamster itself, or minimo, following what you just suggested (before I had clicked the link -- seemed like the thing to do -- and got the weird error message as before. I didn't get your instructions before).

But all I got was some empty files with random filenames in /tmp. Where are they supposed to appear, and with what names?

Just tried Icehamster. It's nice!
"Save Link As..." then tap works for me.
What is missing in the file downloading dialog is the filename, which is left blank and i have to fill that in.

Do you get a "Save As..." dialog window when you click the link?

Agreed. Once I work out how to do that (reliably), I'll be happy.

this looks awsome.. does it exist as an Angstrom package?

CODE
apt-get -f install

Thanks for the suggestion, datathief....my main concern was whether or not forcing the install and upgrading the dependent packages might break my current setup, that is working nicely right now....

Meanwhile....just tried

Please see thread Apt-get Issues

that relates to the libts issue.....in fact I had posted on it and noted problems related to this....which ended up later leading up to my re-installing Debian EABI again....

Hmmm...now, it's asking if I want to change '/etc/ts.conf' or not.....

Did you accept the new version of this file or leave the old one?

I went ahead and accepted the new version....then after that a lot of other files got updated/configured....

UPDATE: I now have a touchscreen calibration problem....cursor in IceWM is way off....

I try quitting IceWm and then running 'ts_calibrate' but it opens and then quickly closes.....console shows quite a few lines of calibration related text saying that it took readings from different points.....

Just checked '.profile' and it says the following related to touchscreen:

CODE
export TSLIB_TSDEVICE="/dev/input/ts0"
export TSLIB_CONFFILE="/etc/ts.conf"

Just checked '/etc/ts.conf' and it has everything commented out EXCEPT for the following lines:
CODE
module_raw input

module pthres pmin=1
module variance delta=30
module dejitter delta=100
module linear

Any suggestions as to how to get touchscreen calibrated again???

Thanks!!

Always (99% of the time) choose not to update the config file. I chose to keep my current config. You can however type "D" to see for your self what changes will be made.

I always run ts_calibrate from within icewm. Just pull up a console and run ts_calibrate. You may have to su to root 1st if you are running as a non-privileged user.

Here is my /etc/ts.conf
CODE
module_raw input grab_events=0
module_raw corgi
module pthres pmin=1
module variance delta=30
module dejitter delta=100

Yup, that did it, mikeones!!!

Just edited 'ts.conf' to match your first 2 lines and voila! 'ts_calibrate' runs OK again.....got screen calibrated and working now again!!
