Thinking of installing the Cacko rom having just installed pdaXii13. Reason for moving to a sharp rom is the need to run the following piece of software...

I am currently using the Z as a tool to learn about Linux as a sort of introduction, a bit of a carrot since I like playing around with gadgets. But I have the following questions

1.Is there a comprehensive guide to installing Cacko on the 1000?
2.The author of 'tkcsoq' said that he only supports the Sharp rom, is this likely to work in cacko then since Cacko is a Sharp ROM?
3.Is cacko more like a pda rom than a linux installation (quite liked the pdaX implementation)
4.Will I be able to use 2Gb SD cards?
5.Is the Planex Wifi card compatible?
6.Will I still be able to run Linux commands found in a typical Linux installation from the CLI in cacko?

Sorry if some of the questions are silly but am still learning the ropes.

1. Probably, but I don't know where it is. Check the OESF wiki and Tyrannozaurus.com, or search the forums.

2. If it works in the Sharp ROM, it ought to work in Cacko.

3. I would say yes. but YMMV. It is Linux, but you don't really see Linux.

4. Yes, with the C3200 driver (I don't know where to get it). SDHC cards will NOT work, though.

I'm sure there's a similar app for other distros, if that's the only reason you want Cacko. I may be able to code up a (very) basic version of it (CLI), if you'd like (no guarantees, though).

You may need to restore your C1000 to original Sharp ROM first. I don't know for sure.
I do know the models with a hard drive need some hacking to transition from pdaXrom back to Sharp/Cacko

Thats a very generous offer but I could not ask you to do that, there was an app in Palm called Quizzler which was a decent flash card study aid program and was great for preparing for exams. What i would have to do is buy a palm pda off ebay just to run this soft, it would just set me back about GBP50.00 Would love to write something for the Z in Java myself but am only beginning to learn Java so it might be sometime

I might just give the Cacko rom a go as it might save me some money.

Forgot to ask are there any sites where i can download stuff (are they called feeds?) for the cacko rom or are they all gone?

Thanks Jon Will have a look at that, bit worried that alot of that stuff is out of date though

if you do a NAND backup beforehand, you can resore your sharp ROM back to exactly how it was anyway, so trying Cacko is a low-risk trial (excepting the 3000 where everything's on hard drive)

Just realize that it's a very small program to load a text file and read random entries/questions, then compare the answer you give to what it has as the answer. Unless there are unforeseen issues/complications, it should take 30 minutes max to write.

I'd use the source code to one of the simpler "fortune" cookie programs as the basis for this.

What language would you use, is there something i could use to program this on the Z myself and of course learn easily?

I'd use C++. You can easily use it on the Z (at least with Debian/pdaXrom/Angstrom, I don't know about Cacko). Just download the ZGCC image, mount it, and off you go. The only other thing you need is a text editor (SciTE is nice, but a little slow, VIM is nice as well, but takes getting used to).

C++ is fairly straightforward IMO, so if you google around for tutorials, you can easily learn enough to code this app.

One of the reasons I had for moving to the Cacko rom was to be able to run a flash card program from the Kcompany, this didn't work out unfortunately due to the manual being in Japanese and there being little current support. But will be staying with the Cacko rom as its been a pleasure to use and does what i want for now at least until i know my way around Linux and am adventurous enough to try another ROM. Have gone and bought myself a cheap palm T3 which will allow me to use a good flash card study program I've used many times before. Currently making tentative steps to learning Java and am seriously tempted by Python which i am told is easier to get to grips with, and the fact that PyQt is the GUI of choice if you are using the Sharp ROM.
