Hey all,
I'm thinking about making the switch (again) from WinXP to Linux ... probably Mandrake 10 or Suse 9. How difficult would it be to set up my Sl-5500 under those conditions? What would I need? and would I need to do anything 'special' to make it work?

I think he means that he's switching his desktop from winxp to linux, and he's looking for assistance with connectivity with his 5500 and the new linux box.
jdralphs - can you add what rom you have/plan to use on your 5500, and what specifically you are looking to do (ie. connectivity over usb or wifi, synching, etc.)?
thanks

Mandrake 9.2 works fine for me. I think there may be issues with Mandrake 10 (due to the 2.6.x kernel). I'd search the forum for specific 2.6.x kernel issues and this will give you an idea of how much effort it will be. That said, I don't think it's *that* hard with a little perseverance.

I'm running Mandrake 9.2 with 2.4.20 kernel and debian with 2.6. I'ven had any problems with mandrake, (make sure you use usbnet module). I'm yet to try on debian.

I have been using Redhat 9.0 with my C750, and so far everything works fine - excepting I dont know about synching, since I never really needed syncing with Evolution or any other PIM.
USB Storage works fine too - and I didnt need to do any compiling of the kernel for USB support - it does come with USB support as such. I am using the Cacko 1.20 ROM on my C750.
allbest to you

I was planning on using the Sharp 3.10 or 3.13 rom with usb synchronization. I'm not sure what program on the desktop I'd use to synch, whether evolution or..... But before I make 'the switch' I just wanted to asses the damages.

There is no Qtopia desktop that will run under linux for synching with Sharp 3.xx ROMS. You can use KO/Pi to synch with KOrganizer. Other than that I use rsync to backup my Z. VNC to type in long information, say to the addressbook or a new Shopping List using the desktop and vncserver on the Z.

Or, you could assist my project,
http://zsrep.sourceforge.net, and help the community give a solution to a horrible problem. This will soon provide a tool to allow syncing of the new ROMs. We are very close to having it working right now.

SuSE 9.2 is great on the desktop, and with pi-sync I have calender and address book sync set up with Korganizer and Kaddressbook.
